Large window no privacy

I have a large living room window on one end. it goes from the bottom of the floor to almost ceiling height, and takes up almost the whole wall. My house is looked over. I have curtains put up, and I have a small garden outside of it but when they curtains are open anyone in the houses opposite or walking by can see into the entire room. Without blocking my own view or taking away the light into the room what can I do? My neighbours have blinds across their window the whole time but they have to have their light on all the time and I don’t want that

There are some 70s-built houses like that near me, and without exception they have had the bottom half bricked up and a new window put in, which is probably the best solution.
You could hang some long plain voile curtains, they don't take away much light at all and give privacy.

You can get professional tinted essentially window stickers so you can look out bit people can't see in.

Chersfrozenface · 27/06/2024 15:15

Or privacy window film on the bottom half of the window and plain voile/s above.

Venetian blinds? Twist the slats to offer privacy without loss of light?

Look at these too. My family use this company.

I made some very gathered floor to ceiling undyed muslin drapes. They looked great and didn't cut out much light.

Devilsmommy · 27/06/2024 15:17

Day and night blind? Venetian?

PotOfTulips · 27/06/2024 15:20

Folding screen across at approx half height?

goingtotown · 27/06/2024 15:32

We had our full length window part bricked up with insulation between the bricks, a new window installed with a window sill, it looks great.

We use the window privacy film on ours. It doesn’t alter our view out but you can’t see in. It was ordered off Amazon and we fitted it our self x

Some of these, if not all, are one way in daylight but not when you put the inside lights on, so you'd need to be disciplined about drawing curtains or blinds when you put a light on. You could layer up with the film for the daytime, then the most translucent blinds or voile for those in-between times near dusk and dawn and in the winter when you might have at least a side light on but still want light coming in, and then curtains.

We have the same problem, and personally I find that the most translucent of blinds works fine for us and then we open them when we want to see the garden, but it doesn't mean we see it all through the day.

Wooden shutters are ideal for this. And you can get them put in cafe style, and keep the top half open during the day for additional light.

SpringKitten · 27/06/2024 16:24

get a few large pot plants / indoor trees and stand them inside the window.
They won’t block the light but because they are bright and in the foreground they will catch the eye . You’d have to focus “past” the plants and most passers-by won’t stop and stare.

I’ve done this in our home office which is right on the street and it’s surprisingly effective (albeit a smaller window).

AcceptingTherapy · 27/06/2024 16:54

I’d also say the mirror window film, it’s really effective.

Venetian blinds or shutters if you have the budget. Curtains-even voile-will make the inside dim. Vertical blinds look like a municipal building.

I have white voile curtain panels at my living room windows, they let the light through nicely but stop the really harsh glare of the sun , I can see through them but people walking past can't look in. Mine have a light flower pattern at the bottom so they don't look so plain as well .

Saz12 · 27/06/2024 22:05

Window film.

Or plants. They'll fool your eye but not let people see in.

Aquamarine1029 · 27/06/2024 22:08

I would have mirrored window film professionally installed in your case. You will still need to close your curtains/blinds at night, but during the day it should be very effective.

justasking111 · 27/06/2024 22:11

I had voiles, three windows, cottage style. They were white with fine green embroidery detail, very pretty and didn't lose any light.

treaclepumpkin · 04/07/2024 20:18

Allusion blinds?

FeatherBoas · 04/07/2024 20:21

.You bought the wrong house.

WhereYouLeftIt · 04/07/2024 20:51

This is why net curtains were invented! Nets or voile curtains don't block out the light, but they do obscure the view for people on the outside.

We have a voile blind on our big living room window. We mostly have it half down. People can't see in but we get light and can see the flowers in the front garden.

Happyher · 28/07/2024 19:29

I have up and down blinds that can be pulled up from the bottom or down from the top. I have a large bay and the pavement outside is above the window so people can see directly in. I position the blinds in the middle in their eyeline so they can’t see as much. Also use it to cover up ugly vehicles that park there. You can move them around to where ever you want them in the day
