Will I regret not getting 58cm deep Pax wardrobes and getting the 35cm ones instead?

We’ll have one wardrobe either side of a chimney breast, and we’ll put a frame around them to make them look fitted.

I think the configuration options with the 58cm are much more practical and give you much more space for the hanging of clothes.

But the 58cm deep ones would make the furniture layout of the room a bit of a pain, as they’d come out from the chimney breast quite a bit, and we wouldn’t be able to open one of the doors on one side without the radiator getting in the way.

Seeing as these are going to be a permanently attached fixture, will we regret not going for the deeper option?

The room will be a nursery to begin with and then our DS’s bedroom as he grows older.

Can you actually hang things properly in the narrower version ?

User364837 · 26/06/2024 18:19

I think if it’s primarily for kids stuff the shallower ones will be fine, I could be wrong but I think that’s the standard depth of their kids wardrobe and pretty sure you can just about fit an adults hanger. So I think it sounds like it will be ok and worth the pay off

I’d find it annoying to not be able to hang things sideways - with the shallow pax I believe hangers have to be facing you rather than the normal way. But the alternative sounds annoying too. Sounds like shelves might be a better option than wardrobes tbh.

Could you do the deeper ones with sliding doors?

sarahc336 · 26/06/2024 18:21

It would drive you mad op

Talipesmum · 26/06/2024 18:24

There’s not much hanging space. If you are someone who likes ironing things it may annoy you.
My now teen boys only have school shirts hanging in their wardrobes- everything else is in drawers. If you had lots of shelving in there, and space for one lot of hanging items, it might be ok.

You can't hang things. We got around that by putting a coat peg thing along the back.
The actual IKEA rail is useless.

Likewise, the drawers always felt like they finish before they start.

But it all depends on what you are going to put there and how good your storage is elsewhere.

How wide are they?

My 50 wide one felt like a waste of time. But I now have a 75 wide one. This is not as irritating and can actually hold stuff.

If the radiator gets in the way of the door opening could you make the pair of doors into a bifold door so that one folds back on the other and then they both open out only on the side without a radiator? Not sure whether I've explained that properly!

GargoylesofBeelzebub · 26/06/2024 18:29

You will regret it.

Have you considered the platsa range. This has different configurations and the shallower depth is 40cm and you can have hanging rails which pull out.

Twoshoesnewshoes · 26/06/2024 18:53

I think it can look quite good if the alcove cupboards actually stick out beyond the chimney breast, and then fill in across the chimney breast with a narrow shelf/desk/dressing table type thing so it’s all the same depth.
if that makes any sense.

We went for the deeper ones with the sliding doors. It wasn’t the design I wanted but now I love them. My only regret is not getting the super tall ones as we had just decorated and I didn’t want to rip all the coving off and with the coving on they would have poked out even further into the limited space in the room.

autienotnaughty · 26/06/2024 20:57

We had a similar layout to you and went for the tall ones. No regrets. The extra storage is brilliant. There's no chest of drawrs in that room because pax don't do matching furniture so our only other storage is under bed.

Thank you all for the advice! Sliding doors won’t work as each wardrobe would have to be only 100cm wide to fit into each alcove.
