Classic plain bone china tableware

Can anyone recommend classic plain bone china tableware? I don’t want anything modern or with a straight edge because it doesn’t sit in the dishwasher nicely. So far I’ve only been able to find what I’m looking for at Zara Home and I’m a bit iffy about the quality (and whether I’ll be able to replace pieces when they break as it’s more of a seasonal shop).

This stuff isn't genuine bone china, but it looks similar, has good reviews, and they've been making it for years and years. Link doesn't work for some reason.

Have you looked at Royal Worcester Garrick? The design is a bit pared-down, but it's actual bone china, and the quality will be there.

@ShrubRose Thank you! This is exactly what I’m looking for but I think Garrick has been discontinued? I was looking at Serendipity, which I think is its replacement, but it has really bad reviews online - apparently it looses its shine in the dishwasher.

@Metempsychosis Thank you! I’ll take a look the next time I’m in John Lewis. My preference to stick with bone china though is so I can mix and match brands if necessary, but I’ll see how this looks against bone china.

This is my browsing site. They have Serendipity sets but I think Denby White bone china would be good for longevityhttps://www.ecookshop.co.uk/ecookshop/productcategory.asp?page=3&order=&limit=&cat=1027&m=

@Sgtmajormummy Thanks! When I looked at the Denby previously I found the shapes a bit too modern, but the Villeroy & Bosch Royal pattern on that link is very nice!

Oh, what a nuisance.

Villeroy & Bosch Royal is "bone porcelain." I read it quickly - I suppose it's equivalent to "bone china." I'm not familiar with the term.

Still, looks nice.

I have some Villeroy Bosch porcelain and I've been very happy with it.

Thanks for pointing that out @ShrubRose, it didn’t occur to me it wouldn’t be bone china given the price! I’ve no issue with tableware that isn’t bone china I’m just afraid I won’t be able to find anything similar if it’s a bespoke mix and discontinued later.

Yes, that's always a consideration. The Villeroy & Bosch I have is Petite Fleur, which has been around a long time, but of course it's porcelain and it's a floral.

I'll be interested to see what you settle on!

We have serendipity, it is great and fits in the dishwasher well. Originally got it because it was on sale at John Lewis and then I've added and replaced bits over the years.

Sgtmajormummy · 24/06/2024 20:29

Snap! @ShrubRose
I have Villeroy and Boch’s Petite Fleur and Manoir (exact same plate but plain white) for when the flower pattern gets too much.
Apart from getting the basic PF set as a wedding present I’ve bought most of the pieces second hand, including special editions like candlesticks and cake stand. The Manoir was a job lot that I drove 3 hours to pick up.
The only piece I don’t want is the salt and pepper pots- they’re a bit phallic!

Denby China range - I used Tesco points to subsidise mine 😀

I've got several good bone china dinner sets and tea sets. They are all Royal Albert. I've got Memory Lane, Old Country Roses, Lavender Rose and Val d'Or. All are gorgeous. I love collecting them I now have a 24 piece dinner set for Old Country Roses with all serving dishes, salt and pepper pots, gravy jugs, side plates, salad plates, dinner plates and soup coups.

The annoyance of discontinued lines when you have to replace bits which are inevitably broken, was a driving factor in what we have chosen for our tableware and cutlery etc.

Not bone china, but we went for Thomas Loft by Rosenthal. I think it will be made forever! And it is simple but beautiful.

We have had a set of Thomas Loft since our wedding nearly 20 years ago and I see it's still being made! It's maybe a bit modern for the OP but I think the design is elegant and classic. And there's a good range of shapes, including square serving side dishes and a massive oval dish that we mainly use for the roast spuds at Christmas Grin

@MoodEnhancer @mackerella I love Rosenthal Thomas Loft and considered it but I’ve already got a set of Hasami Porcelain tableware, so I have modern covered and am looking for something more traditional so I have two different styles of table setting (also because there are few I’d trust around the Hasami Porcelain, which is expensive and difficult to replace!).
