Can I varnish on top of existing varnish?

My staircase is in dire need of an update as we are slowly updating our hallway. We are replacing this carpet for a lighter one and replacing the floor for a light wooden chevron or herringbone floor. I hate my staircase as it's a mid brown almost reddish colour. I would love to paint over the varnish and make my stairs white but I think I'll regret it so I plan on making the varnish a dark colour to try and remove the reddish tone.
Does anyone know if I can paint over this varnish or would I need to strip this first (dreading this if so).

Can I varnish on top of existing varnish?

In order to get the best finish stripping should be the better option..

The varnish underneath might crack or react.

Why don't you try painting over on a small concealed spot and see how it reacts? That's what we do.

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2 I was hoping that wouldn't be the case! Ugh. Going to be a massive job.
I'll try a bit on top of the existing varnish and see what happens.
