Wall colour for high ceiling Victorian house?

Hi everyone- I have the above - high walls with ceiling rose. Currently many walls are slate grey. Although painted by the previous owner (and look quite nice) I need to redecorate.

I can’t afford to do it all at once so would like a colour for the walls in the hallway and up the stairs that won’t look terrible with slate grey, look broadly in keeping with grey, but look brilliant.

I am terrible at knowing if I like a colour until it’s on the wall. Love aqua type colours - which might not work.

would anyone be prepared to share a picture of their wall colours to get some inspiration?

I would go to the farrow & ball website and look for a colour that’s like the one you have. Then look at the complementary colours. Also order a colour chart. They arranged so you can easily pick complementary colours (like others from the same column or something). Typically they give you ‘instructions’ on how to use the chart.

To add; colours I have used recently and love;

F&B - de nimes (this would go with grey, it’s quite a grey blue)
fired earth - alabaster (this is a great colour to add some warmth but still goes ok with other cool colours. It’s sort of clayish and I love it. We’ve used it loads).

This is our family room. I can't remember the colour names but they are from farrow and ball (matched at dulux trade store).

It might not be at all what you're after, but our furniture is grey which is why I shared it.

We have little greene aquamarine mid and it goes really well with the grey we have remaining. Both are cool colours (unless your grey is a warm colour in which case I would ignore what I’ve said).

I'd design a colour scheme first the whole house, or most of it, and work through slowly. It shouldn't really matter that it goes either grey. Anyway slate grey is a neutral enough shade.

Also, think about whether the windows are south-north or east-west. South and west facing rooms are warmer, so you can get away with more shades. Very tall ceiling and cold aspect means a room can look chilly and uninviting in a cool shade. Another point is that high ceilings and decent size rooms can make colours disappear. I once wanted a barley white dulux sort of shade years ago in a living room , but found in practice in had to go a couple of shades darker to get the same effect as in a previous space.

Have a look at Fenwick and Tilbrook. They have a beautiful range and lots are “coastal” type colours. They’re based in Norwich and deliver next day. I moved to them when I couldn’t seem to find what I wanted any more from F and B or Fired Earth.

I can vouch for Seal Pup, Great Lake and Scotch Mist!

60. Great Lake

This delicate pale blue with green undertones is reminiscent of a Cumbrian lake on a cold bright winter morning. This colour previously sat in our archive range as 'Botanical Berry'

What about a pale pink, such as F&B's Tailor Tack, which subtle, soft and would go beautifully with your grey.

With high ceilings you have loads of options! We've used Lick Pink 01 in our kitchen/diner/snug which goes nicely with grey. I've also just used a colour match of F&B Green Smoke in the lounge and I love it!

I also suggest that you consider what I would describe as heritage colours, which are duskier. Anything really bright might look quite jarring.

I agree with considering your future colour scheme for the whole house. Have a look at the 'red thread' concept in this blog https://www.madaboutthehouse.com/how-to-find-your-red-thread/

For me, it's navy blue. I have elements of navy in every room, whether that's curtains, patterns on the cushions and in the rug, on the wallpaper in the bathroom.....

Monday Inspiration: The Red Thread

This has proved one of the most popular posts this year with many of you taking to instagram to describe your own red threads (rarely are they actually red) so

I have an Edwardian house with high ceilings. 3 reception rooms downstairs, one duck egg blue, one teal and one bottle green. Stairs, hall and landing are pink. Kitchen is a pale yellow.
