Is this naff?

I’m considering wall paper for the first time - I’ve always disliked it previously but fancy a change. is brick effect or stone effect wallpaper completely tacky and unfashionable?

I’m going to use it on a half area of wall mixed with panelling, house is country cottage and does have real stone work on chimney breast.

was going to do greens and botanical paper but haven’t found anything that grabs me yet.

Is this naff?

I think it would look good in a country cottage type house.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/04/2024 10:05

It's really awful, sorry!

IClaudine · 15/04/2024 10:05

Eek. I think it is tacky, sorry. It will date quickly too, I think.

Teacupsandrollups · 15/04/2024 10:06

Sorry, op 😬

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 15/04/2024 10:07

I don't love it so I don't have it in my house. If you love it then have it in your house.

N4ish · 15/04/2024 10:07

No, I'm sorry. It would look really awful.

yogpot · 15/04/2024 10:07

I think it’s really naff, but if you like it then hopefully you’ll disregard everyone saying it’s naff. Other people not liking it isn’t a good enough reason to not have something you like in your house!

Susanlincs · 15/04/2024 10:10

Not keen sorry looks very cheap and nasty real thing for me or nothing but hard to tell tbh on a picture . The fact that you are asking tells me you are unsure so don’t do it .

I think since you have real stonework in your house the comparison will not be flattering to the paper. Either lean in to the country cottage vibe and get a floral wallpaper or go very modern with an abstract design to create contrast. Or stick with paint.

SnapdragonToadflax · 15/04/2024 10:12

I think it is naff, I'm sorry. A real stone wall in an appropriate house is lovely, but a fake one will never look the same.

Yeah this. I think it's awful but even more so in an older cottage style house.

Okayornot · 15/04/2024 10:14

You'll have to get a sample and see how it looks int he same space as real stone.

It isn't my taste but if you like it then you should have what you like. The good thing about wallpaper is if you change your mind it can be revisited!

TimeandMotion · 15/04/2024 10:19

I think that fake brick or stone paper works in things like cafes that are functional retail units but want a more natural materials vibe. Places where you know really that it’s not real brick or stone but it works well enough to create the right environment for the duration of your lunch or coffee.

In a home, however, no. Especially if you have real stonework elsewhere. You’re too up close and personal with the fakery at home.

Stick to the botanicals, that will be lovely.

SiobhanSharpe · 15/04/2024 10:22

I think the stone-effect wallpaper will suffer in comparison with the real thing that will be nearby.
The difference will be obvious, sorry.

ScubaDivingSpiderMonkey · 15/04/2024 10:23

Brick effect wallpaper is very naff, yes.

11NigelTufnel · 15/04/2024 10:23

It is your house so you should go with what you like. You can always paint or paper over it if you go to move. It isn't to my taste but then plenty of people won't like my taste either.

Excellent advice here

I think it can be done well if you choose the right wallpaper.

For example, relief wallpapers for brick and stone are much more realistic rather than a printed flat image of bricks/stone. It sounds like it would suit the cottage, but just go for something that actually looks like stone/brick and not a flat image which is very tacky and ages badly.
