Wall panels

I’m looking for some wall panels to add some interest to around waste height behind our bed.

i feel I must be missing something as the cost seems very high.

has anyone panelled their home and not spent £1000s in the process?

We used Hare Wall Panelling. I think they're Yorkshire way. Very reasonable, helpful if you need advice and excellent product. The result was worth it.

You could go 1980s and have a dado rail.

Personally I think these wall panels will date incredibly quickly and be a nightmare to change once they’re in. I wouldn’t bother, OP!

I wouldn't either. Like the dado rail it will look naff in a few years' time.

I like panelling and have some for years, not worried about fashion as such because I like it! Initially I used mdf panels that look like individual boards but come in interlocking sheets, I don't think they are even on the market anymore.

Recently I panelled my kitchen island and a wall in the kitchen using 12mm mdf sheet and a small cordless circular saw to cut strips of approx 4" wide then cut to size and stuck on to wall or thin mdf sheet in case of island. Cost very little to do as a sheet of mdf is not expensive, the saw was about 40 quid and has well earned its cost on various jobs. Bit of glue, few screws, paint and job done. All you need is accuracy cutting and level to put up straight.

@Brendaloves , have a look on YouTube - panelling is very popular at the moment and lots of people are doing it at a fraction of the price. You have to be handy at DIY though.

Waste height panelling can potentially clash with the headboard and look too busy / bitty. Have you considered a slightly higher option, maybe with a mini shelf and / or lights incorporated? For example:

@marylou25 , do you mean something like tongue and groove cladding? This type is still out there, for example at Wickes or Homebase 😊🔨

Possibly, I got it in B&Q at the time, we no longer have Homebase here and only had a couple of Wickes which are long gone too.

I did my own for under £50

I wouldn't want anything described as 'waste-height' in my house but my midriff could be described as a wasteline. Wink

Are you trying to be "helpful" or just rude?

KirstenBlest · 03/04/2024 08:20

@Curtainsforus , it's the mental image of a pile of 'waste' being used as a measure. Did you not see the wink?

I did see the wink, still comes across as rude.

KirstenBlest · 03/04/2024 09:53

@Curtainsforus , waste height in a bathroom could mean the height of the waste pipe, the bath waste or the sink waste.

I panelled the bottom half of our downstairs bathroom. I used a panelling kit from B&Q. Basically strips of MDF cut to the right size - then primed it, caulked the edges and painted. Not bothered about it dating as we want to redo it anyway in a few years when we have the budget. It looks great and cost about £150.
