How would you decorate a nursery around this mural?

It’s a fairly large room and this will be across one wall. The wall opposite it has a chimney breast (and alcoves).

I was thinking maybe pale green walls, a darkish grey/green carpet and then deep violet in the alcoves for a pop of colour? Ceiling, skirting and picture rail would be white.

Does that sound mad? Very open to suggestions! I really want to get pops of colour in, somehow.

Hopeful bump.

Sage green on the walls to pull out the colour of the leaves, grey carpet to complement the animals, white as you have described. Oak shelving, slats in the alcoves either side of the chimney breast or furniture would work beautifully with the colour scheme, otherwise I would stay white and add accents of colour with throws or cushions, perhaps on a nursing chair or the cot (not while baby is in it though, obviously 🫣).

Thanks for responding!

I really don’t want a subdued colour palette, and sage green and grey feel a bit boring/meh, if that makes sense? I love bright colourful nurseries.

The mural is great and your initial plan works fine but if you love colour you can add more. I think strong bright yellow would do well with what you've already got planned - how about curtains in the same violet as the alcoves with a yellow pattern, maybe yellow tropical flowers with green leaves so the green links in too? Also blue. Turquoise bue ceiling? With clouds on and maybe some leaves creeping from the corners? Then a rug picking up some of the colours and themes.
Just ideas.

Curtains picking up the violet/green/yellow. Not what I had in mind but the closest in colour I can find (so far).

I think you’d find deep violet would suck the light and give the exact effect you want to avoid. It’d actually be more vibrant with subtle colouring on the walls. I’d go for a green tinged white a bit lighter than the mural background and primrose in the alcoves with a dark or mid green carpet and something tropical leaf patterned at the window.

I’ve got a very, very light green tinged room and it reflects the light beautifully.

That sounds delightful! Thank you.

This is wild! It's a fabric on Etsy that you could have made into curtains and a couple of cushions too.

I LOVE this!

That sounds very nice, but a bit more muted than I’m hoping for. Thank you, though.

I LOVE this!

Oh good! It's pretty fab isn't it? I've never bought fabric from Etsy but I'm sure you could find something similar elsewhere if that suits you better.

Red, proper pillar box red, would go with that mural.

I’m getting it. Even if it’s not for that room, I want it! 😊

Ooh, that sounds fun. In the alcoves, instead of the violet? Or elsewhere?

you are going to struggle to find a ‘bright’ palette which will complement the cool tones of the mural

Your colour choices, plus these warm toned bright yellow botanical curtains will create colour imbalance and will look jarring. A cool toned red wall might make sense with colour theory but in practice is just going to make a dark, cold room.

a nice sage green with oak as a pp mentioned will make a light, bright room.

However, if you want a bright, fun nursery- that mural is the wrong place to start if you don’t like the idea of having a lighter shade with it. It’s grey.

It’s possibly not coming across very well in the photo, but it’s actually not at all grey. The greens are really vibrant. I think it’d be quite fun with the funky curtains. I shall report back!

I love this* it's super fun. Id be less brave and go with green in general but I can see where you're going. Given that these are sloths (they are sloths right?!) I'd be tempted to back away from the violet and instead think tropical rainforest with pops of yellow and orange. I think violet might just eat the light and you won't get the look you're after.

They are sloths! 😁

I was really set on the violet, but everyone seems against it. Maybe a burnt orange in the alcoves? DH has suggested a forest green, but I REALLY don’t want a green room.

Amelie2024 · 02/04/2024 02:21

The sloths are cute, but even if the greens are more vibrant, I don't think it's the best starting place.

There are so many, more vibrant & interesting, papers around. I'd put the sloth paper elsewhere if you're set on it!

EatingSleeping · 02/04/2024 06:31

I get you don't want a green room but in which case I'm not sure this is the mural for you. If you pop it in one wall and 'ignore' the green and add in other pops I think it'll feel disjointed. This is probably best paired with green (or grey which sounds very much not what you'd want). What is it about it you really love and could you find it somewhere else? Something that is much more colour led might be a better option

PegasusReturns · 02/04/2024 06:56

You can’t have a vibrant room with a grey carpet and I agree with pp that violet/red etc will suck the light out.

I love the ochre fabric a pp linked, however it is horrible with the mural. Both in terms of palette and style.

CultOfTheAirFryer · 02/04/2024 08:04

Agree the mural doesn’t go with what you’re describing as wanting.
