Low-cost home upgrades

Does anyone have any low-cost home upgrade ideas please?

We’re currently in the process of having our sockets upgraded from the standard white plastic ones, to brushed antique brass ones.

Maybe someone can suggest something that I haven’t thought about yet!

Hard to tell without seeing what you've done to your house.

A no cost upgrade I enjoy doing is to open all the windows to air the place, shake all the rugs, put the throws etc on the line for an hour or two to waft about in the fresh air, dust, clean and vacuum from top to bottom, pick some flowers from the garden and put them in a vase and if I can be bothered clean a few windows. Clean sheets on the bed and clean the bathroom and kitchen with something that smells nice.

The whole place feels like that moment you arrive at a holiday cottage.

Isn’t that just cleaning your house ?

@Janehasamane You're right, but it's not a level of cleaning that I do every day or even every week in my house and it does transform the place without spending any money.

Very true! So far we have upgraded our taps and hardware, such as handles. We also have new alcove cupboard doors and sockets.

I have a budget of just over £100.

Paint the front door.

@ColourByNumbers88 Love that idea, thank you!

We are shuffling the kitchen about slightly, and just repainting the doors and replacing the door knobs.

New light bulbs all round can make a big difference too.

Some ideas:

  • Window sill planters / hanging baskets to brighten up the front garden (if you have one)
  • Mirror for the hallway / another small dark space to reflect light
  • Painting a tired radiator or getting a radiator cover
  • Throws to cover an older sofa
  • Replace discoloured sealant in the bathroom
  • New shades for some ceiling lights
  • Wood or bamboo duck board, bath tray & a nice candle
  • Houseplants!

If you are on a tight budget try looking at local freecycle or eco community groups for freebies. I've got (& given away) some lovely bits via our local Facebook eco community group.
