I'm completely confused and going around in circles with paint colours.

This is our lounge when we last decorated. The carpet is being replaced and will be a bit darker, apart from that everything will be the same including the red plaid chair. The yellow feels a bit too yellow. Any paint suggestions please? Preferably Dulux paint colours.

Very pale green.
Dulux Heritage Pearl.
Or white....Dulux Heritage Roman White

All your colours are too warm ATM

Red goes very nicely with pale green or pale blue.

Also the contrast with the ceiling is making your room shrink.
Same colour white all way down to picture rail...and lighter below than existing cream.

Grey would also look classy...I havent used a grey recently

But Dulux Goose down or Rock Salt often recommended on here.

Not a creamy colour whatever you do!!! And not a taupe or beige.

What colours do you like?

You have red, grey, yellow and wood.

Do you want a simple nutmeg to de-yellow it or are you looking for a full restyle that works with red tartan?

I think you need something to blend the grey curtains and wood together.

Google colour wheels and how they work and see what appeals

I think with the beige furnishings it has to be something two tones lighter or risks them looking muddy/off tone.
Dulux Mineral Mist is also lovely and uplifting. But take ceiling to the picture rail..in white.

SpringOfContentment · 21/03/2024 21:56

Would you change the curtains?
That's what jars the most to me.

Nettleskeins · 21/03/2024 21:56

Also larger picture over mantle piece in blues greens reds no yellow!
TV table is blocking window, TV should be away from window could it be other side of fireplace
Pot plant near window on stand instead (Green and leafy)
Long curtains to dress window better?? Thick blind for cold evenings and draw fully at night when heating off.

I also agree on curtains op, I think those and the grey cushions need changing.

id take the yellow, out and use something like skimming stone and add colour through cushions, curtains and a rug.

the room needs softness to it, as it feels quite sparse.

edit you can colour match farrow and ball in Dulux,

Skimming Stone No.241 | Handcrafted Paint

Skimming Stone takes its name from a 19th century plaster colour, but often reminds us of afternoons skimming stones. Available in-store and online.

Don't change cushions yet

Its not the furnishings
It's the yellow that needs to be avoided with those sofas!! Cheaper to repaint than refurnish.
I'm a great fan on yellow walls but I think it's better with dark wood and lots of white, patterns, damasks, embroidery...NOT beige and plaid and rustic chic/light oak.
That needs sage or white or light blue imho

Mamaemmeline · 21/03/2024 22:11

All these comments are really helpful. Thank you.

Yes, the curtains could go.

I'm not sure what I think to going a very neutral colour like skimming stone. I'm concerned it could look too bland next to the sofa.

I'm interested in the green suggestion the first poster mentioned but we do seem to have lots of green in the house. With the red plaid chair would you put a light green like the dh pearl colour or something like a sage green or overtly olive?

I disagree, I find them really dated and all a bit matchy,

id do some lovely modern cushions to add some colour and tie with the red,

then some nice velvet olive curtains.

and then a lovely rug on the floor.

with a neutral wall.

Agree the curtains should be changed. I think short curtains like that are quite dated. A sage green with dark red accents can look lovely.

parietal · 21/03/2024 23:04

curtains in that room should go from floor to ceiling, effectively covering the whole wall. the short curtains look mean and odd. Or roman blinds if you don't want long curtains.

Wangsorangesuit · 22/03/2024 04:49

This room could be so cosy. I agree the curtains would look better longer. and I'd change the light.
I'd paint it darker including the ceiling. What direction does the room face? North light/south light? That makes a big difference to how the paint colour looks.

Mamaemmeline · 22/03/2024 08:23

Good point. It faces north (the small window) and south (the large window).

It is usually flooded with light.

The Overtly Olive you suggested looks lovely but it's impossible to see the colours properly on a screen, you'll need to get testers but, speaking from experience, they will all look horrible.

Wangsorangesuit · 22/03/2024 15:50

If you want it to be cocooning, try and find a mid-toned green or blue based pink.
