Dark hallway with dark wood- help!

Hi everyone,

Hoping for some advice on colours.

We've recently moved into an old Victorian terraced house and have had our hallway skimmed. The space is quite dark- the only natural light comes in above the front door, which faces North/West. It just feels a bit gloomy when combined with our pine floors and pitch pine staircase and trim throughout.

We will be putting in a stair runner eventually to brighten up the staircase, and want to put lots of art up on the walls.

Can anyone recommend a paint colour? We're looking at farrow and ball's School House White, but are worried about bringing too many yellow tones in. At the same time, we don't want anything too stark against the beautiful dark wood (which we don't really want to paint)

Much appreciated!

F&B Wevet might be a good choice. I have used it a lot and it would lighten your hallway a lot.

Pinks are quite fashionable. Pick a warm colour you like. Put a mirror on your wall.

Ive used F&B hay before in a hallway - gives a lovely glow and is a good neutral background for lots of pictures.

Wevet can have a grey even lilacy undertone it’s a cooler colour
Wimborne white is lovely not as yellow as the other ones it’s a soft warm white not too warm though and slipper satin lovely in the right room. Pointing is nice too . If you don’t get much light I would avoid cool colors as it could look drab and cold.

If you don’t want it to look gloomy pick a colour with a slightly higher LRV however many people say work with the darkness. I don’t really like dark hallways personally I keep that for the W/C.

Also if you are putting lots of artwork in I would stick to a lighter wall and the colours can come from your artwork

slipper satin might read a little too dark actually . Also whatever colour you pick will pick up /reflect the wood colouring too

Another vote for Wimbourne White. I have it through my house. I think it would work well in your hallway.

F&B Tallow might work - they recommend it for lightening up dark spaces and it is a warm shade. Should work well with art works - 'd also try and add a large statement mirror on a wall opposite the light source as it really makes a difference in bouncing light around. https://www.farrow-ball.com/paint/tallow
