Hi

I need to buy a few things such as a sofa, chest of drawers, bed and conservatory furniture. Where is a good place to look on a tight budget?

Many thanks.

I would honestly look for second hand. I bought a lovely sofa recently for less than £150 from a shop that sells second hand furniture. It was all professionally cleaned and looks like new. Would probably have paid £1500 for a similar one that was new. I looked at ikea etc initially but they're not actually that cheap for decent sofas etc.

I'm now on the lookout for a few other bits, bedside tables, drawers etc. I'm checking out the second hand furniture shops, FB marketplace, gumtree etc

We have a local upcycle centre, they have some lovely things in there at good prices

Apart from the sofa, I'd look at second hand. I recently needed a decent desk to wfh. I looked at various sources and all were £00s for something large & sturdy enough.

Finally I tried the council furniture refurb project, and found a lovely solid pine table with waxed top and painted base, perfect size, for £40 including delivery. And it was delivered the following day. Absolute bargain.

My new office chair hasn't arrived yet.

Well ikea is the standard for cheap furniture but if you want something more interesting there can be great bargains at a local auction house - antiques for £20 etc.

Local auctions, Facebook market place, charity shops, freecycle, ask friends/family. Most of my furniture is 2nd hand, I rarely spend more than £50 on something.

Facebook market place

Punxsatawnyphil · 13/02/2024 07:39

Ikea is usually good value for money. Though it's getting rarer to find solid wood furniture anywhere. I do love FB marketplace, I got a solid mango wood coffee table for £40.

Hi

Thanks very much for your ideas, I will start looking. I don't move into new house for approx 2 months but with some some unexpected costs the budget has gone down!

Many thanks again x

I would also recommend local auction houses , Freecycle. Do also look at liquidators who have auctions online with a delivery service eg John Pye. As well as liquidating they also re sell furniture returns from John Lewis, Nkuku, marks and spencer etc.

You might also have a furniture warehouse near you that sells slightly damaged, end of line or returned items cheaply.

BHF furniture shops sometimes have some really good stuff, my local sense charity shop also occasionally has furniture worth checking local ones, yy auction houses.

I would look at British Heart Foundation furniture shops, or Air Ambulance. Those are the two big ones near me and seem to have lots of really nice stuff at a reasonable price.

EdithStourton · 13/02/2025 19:31

Auctions and charity shops.
I have seen some amazing things in charity shops that specialise in furniture - Emmaus, like BHF, is really good.

Agree with all of the above. Local auction houses, FBMP, gumtree, freecycle and ebay. I got two Ercol chairs on ebay for £235, I did wait a while but got local ones so no delivery costs either. Bargain!

Vinterior is more expensive but there are still bargains to be had so worth a look.
