Pick my bedroom furniture please

I have a pathetically small budget but no bedroom furniture. Please can someone help me pick some furniture that won’t date or look cheap? I have a very boring style because I can’t think of anything, prefer minimalist if anything with a few colour accents.

I need 2 wardrobes and a chest.

I did see some lovely navy ones but im scared they will date and I won’t get drawers that match (do they need to match? I assume so!)

Are ikea wardrobes any good? I can’t afford PAX so it would be a ‘standard’ one?

If you have a small budget, I'd genuinely recommend looking at gplan mulod century wardrobes. You can often get them cheaply, they're very solid, minimalist and great value for money. Try marketplace, auctions, that kind of thing.

IKEA bedroom furniture is great! Even better if you get someone from task rabbit to assemble (usually you get £10 off your first booking so it's incredibly cheap!) I have ikea bedroom furniture in mine and my children's rooms and it's fab.

Someone I know has all navy and and it looks amazing..

Giantdog · 28/01/2024 17:32

Thanks all of you!

Ive seen a few second hand pieces but no way to transport them. I would also struggle to get them in the house fully assembled.

I do like ikea but I can’t seem to find any I like, need to have another look!

I know quite a lot of gplan actually comes apart for transport. It's always worth checking.

I love the navy. I think it depends on your home and your style. If you have an older house you could go for antique second hand stuff and make a feature out of it.

I live in a 1920-1930 very neglected semi. I’m trying to fix it up on a shoestring. It has bay windows, some original features and lots and lots of artex 🤮

I would actually prefer solid wood second hand, I will keep an eye out. I have seen a beautiful sideboard I would love but I don’t have the eye to match it up to other furniture if that makes any sense? At least if I buy from a range it’s all the same!

You could get a man with a van to transport it?

My DD got a set of shelving from TK Maxx which is too big for a car, so she got a guy to collect and deliver it for £20 on Friday night.

She's getting bits together with the plan to buy a house, and she reckons there's some good stuff on Facebook Marketplace.

Devilsmommy · 28/01/2024 21:07

The stuff from Dunelm called Nevada is really good and they're selling it off at the moment 😁

scrunchmum · 28/01/2024 21:10

IKEA pax wardrobes are really very good and very customisable. And if you change your decor you can change the doors, we changed the doors on ours after a few years easily. Second hand furniture is great as well but you will have to consider the cost of hiring a van/delivery etc.

No your chest of drawers doesn't have to match at all. Just get what you like :)

scrunchmum · 28/01/2024 21:12

Sorry missed the other comments about man with a van, it's always put me off 2nd hand furniture but sounds like it can be done quite reasonably in that case

Ikeawarrior · 28/01/2024 21:23

If you can afford £350 you can afford Pax!

If you just want a basic wardrobe you can get one of these. It's all the extra drawers, mirrored doors etc that make Pax pricey.

I have malm drawers in my bedroom. I have crap wardrobes currently but am planning on getting a big pax soon.

Just bear in mind it doesn’t all have to match. Have a look online for some inspiration.

Seaside3 · 28/01/2024 21:38

Try your local charity shops lots of them have furniture warehouses too. Iy doesn't have to match, but I'd try match the style of you can. Ie, if you want something 1920/30s style to fit on with your house, then I'd look for the same style to start with, until you get confident. If you go lower on your budget, you can afford to swap and change (buy and sell) until you find a style you like.

Giantdog · 29/01/2024 08:48

Thankyou everyone. I e started to sway towards second hand/vintage.

Ive seen a few pieces like this. Too old? How in earth would I style it.

Defo second hand, especially in a 30’s / 40’s house. Furniture doesn’t have to match - personally I like it when it’s not a full matched “bedroom set”. You might get a cheap second hand pine wardrobe you could prime and paint in the navy shade you like, add new door handles etc?

On the hunt myself - we have inherited some lovely walnut bedside tables, needing some wardrobe ideas to complement them!

That's a stunning wardrobe, @Giantdog and the right era. A fantastic price too.
