Which walls to paint teal?

We're decorating our mid terrace Victorian house. We've knocked through so the living room and dining room is essentially one large room (with nibs to separate the spaces).

It has standard chimney breasts with alcoves either side (in both the living room part and the dining room part).

We've decided we want to use teal and maybe neutral colour too although we're still deciding the shade(s). Dulux Teal Tension and Proud Peacock are front runners!

Would you paint the entire space teal? Or a feature wall? Or a feature chimney breast? Or the living room half, teal and the dining room half, neutral?

Can I see photos of your Victorian living rooms please?! Bonus points if they're teal and neutral.

thanks!

Not teal, but blue and neutral. F&B Stiffkey Blue and Ammonite - Good luck with your plans @Teapleasemilknosugar 👍

Gorgeous room @changingzooms thank you for sharing. We almost chose Stiffkey for our bathroom, love the colour!

Not finished my room yet but I've gone green so similar to teal but with patterned wallpaper. Just to add mines an ex council house, sadly not a Victorian terrace which is on my wish list!

We have an identical sitting-dining room configuration and love teal/blue, so I'm currently pondering the same! A couple of years ago I was watching Sarah Beeny's TV show (apologies if you're not a fan 😁) where they decorated a similar space by painting the utmost left and right alcoves blue (plus the coving and the bit of the wall under the bay window). At the time, that looked appealing, as it gave the long room sort of a pair of 'anchors' without overwhelming it, so I saved a couple of screengrabs. I couldn't capture the bit when they panned over the whole room (and I'm not a fan of the 'chalk-washed' wallpaper on the chimney breasts!), but hopefully these pics illustrate the idea and will provide you with a bit of inspiration.
Funnily enough, we're finally getting around decorating the room, but I'd probably go for bolder colour coverage now.

Not teal, but I went for a strong blue (Royal Navy) with a softer neutral (Purbeck) - we wanted the space of two rooms but wanted them to feel like two zones. North facing, so the back bit was always going to be darker, so we thought we’d embrace it with the dark blue. I’ve been really happy with it. Photos not the best as taken in early morning light, but gives you a sense!

Such a lovely colour and nice wall paper, too! What is the grey/neutral colour you've got on the lighter wall please? Can I ask what colour you have on the opposite walls as well, the lighter colour or the green? I don't know if I want most of the room in teal or have it literally just as a feature on the one side of the room 🙈

Thanks! We have a sash window in the back corner of your dark blue side, we have talked about using the two courses one in each end of the room like you have done here though. So helpful to see it pictured. Thanks!

We've done exactly the same - painted the living room side Teal Tension, the dining room side is Cole & Son bamboo wallpaper and light green. I like having it feel like two zones. Will add an image if I can find one!

We've got a sample of Teal Tension on the walk ATM! DH thinks it's a touch too dark, I love it though! Would love to see a picture of it across the room, hard to tell from a sample patch.

We had the same, but did the typical side return extension and blocked the window up. Bonus is it gave us a big eat in kitchen, which I preferred, and now the darker side is my wfh space or where the kids do homework / reading etc. the great thing about period houses is the ceiling height (think ours is about 13ft?) so it can really take strong colours, especially if you break it up above the picture rail with a lighter colour. Non great thing with high ceilings is the heating bill 😂

I'm not sure what colours to do the other walls or whether to paint the fireplace. The sample colour is a soft cream but not sure if it will look too plain!

egowise · 26/01/2024 09:42

I love teal so I say all walls.

Sorry I'm no help 😂

Loving all the decor. Fabulous.

We are also having the same fireplace surround debate! We're having cupboards and shelving built in to each side of the chimney breast, I want them white and the fire surround mantle white too but DH wants to keep the alcove ubtils white and keep the natural wood fireplace surround. It's pine coloured ATM and you can see all the wood filler on top of nails holding it up. I hope I win! Good luck with the rest of your room 😊

I love it too, would it be too much though? Feature wall with accents in the room maybe? I'm so torn!

I walked along our terrace and had a nose in the windows, looks like the entire street is neutral front living rooms from a passerby's glance!

I painted our bedroom Teal Tension. I was a bit worried it would be too dark, but it's not, it seems to reflect the light really well and it is just gorgeous. I'd do all the walls, personally, but that's because it's one of the most beautiful colours I've ever used!

Would add a photo but the light is terrible today.

eurochick · 26/01/2024 12:58

We have Proud Peacock and a neutral in a large bedroom. I love it. It has a lot of depth for a non F&B (or similar) paint.

What sort of neutral do you have? I think we're decided on either Proud Peacock or Teal Voyage but now not sure on the neutral or colour placement 🥴

Paint the alcoves rather than the chimney breast. If you have to do the breast then paint the alcoves too. Just the breast painted looks really dated

I think I'd be disappointed if I just had colour in the back of the alcoves! Might have to do back of alcoves as well as chimney breast then.

Thanks!

I think the neutral is Dulux Daffoldil White.
