Breakfast room green...

My kitchen/dining room has been painted breakfast room green, farrow and ball which I loved initially but now it feels over poweringly green and I'm not sure how to make it feel more sort of, part of the room as opposed to a dominating colour. I need lots up on the walls I think but I haven't a clue where to start. There is one big empty wall that needs filling and two smaller areas with nothing currently on. I'll post pictures. Can anyone help me? Or is it a repaint job?

Argh, don’t tell me this! I’m about to did exactly the same!! It’s a big space so now I’m worried. Would love pics!

I have this colour in our dining part of the kitchen/diner. It's gorgeous. We do have some massive pictures on the big walls which break it up a bit though

I find these “in between” colours hard to cope with, tbh. They’re not bright enough to be a statement, nor are they pale enough to be unobtrusive. It’s not neutral, nor does it pack a punch. I would look at either repainting in a paler green or going all out depending on your taste in kitchen furniture. I love the warm olives of “Jewel Beetle” and “Bancha” by F&B but they’re not for the faint of heart. You could paint low cabinets the green you love, decorate neutrally and paint walls and cabinets above a neutral white or cream, stick with decorating with wood or add light greys. Pigeon is a lovely greeny-grey that would be fab on walls or cabinets. I would rove around on Pinterest and see what inspires you.

What colour are your cabinets?

This sort of green is very light absorbing, as opposed to green with more yellow in them. I think there is also quite a lot of bulk white in it which gives it density but also again seems to absorb light.

The ‘new’ Farrow and Ball ( as opposed to the original colours which were developed for historic buildings) seem to ignore or at least fail to reproduce the original paints which were thinner and and a higher pigment base, so were more recessive on the eye. They were not as matte as modern emulsion, which also made them less obtrusive.

Anyway, you could : have a contrasting wall in a paler more light reflecting colour

have a papered wall which could have an element of the green but with opposing colours from the colour wheel

Could drag or rag roll another colour over the green

put a satin clear coat over the paint which would bounce reflections.

‘panel’ the dining area and introduce a different tone or colour within the sections

The cabinets are a platinum grey and the worktops are stark white so it all felt really cold and clinical. I didn't want something too subtle as the room felt so cold I felt it needed warmth, and I didn't want to go too dark as I felt a more cheery sort of colour would help warm it up and give it a cosy family kitchen sort of feel. To be honest I'm skeptical myself of how well it will go around the cabinets, we haven't got that far yet but it's not really possible to separate the kitchen/dining space colour wise with the way the room is and I just didn't like the white at all. It felt soulless. I'm stuck! I'm hoping lots of things up on wall will tie all together?

I'd love to paint the cabinets but they are only 2 years old and aren't painted wood, they are vinyl and I didn't want to risk trying to paint them and ruining a perfectly good kitchen so I went with the walls instead.

I think that looks fine, OP. It’s the wooden floor, stools and table with the green that make it work by being a sort of warm, natural transition— if it were only a matter of the cabinets and the green walls, it might be a bit too stark, really. I would frame whatever you end up putting on the walls in wood too.

Is there a curtain or blind on that window? Is there another window in the room? It might be a place to use a warm, contrasting colour.

Fraaahnces · 18/01/2024 11:22

I feel like it’s the white that makes it clunky.

BreakfastRoomGreen · 18/01/2024 12:14

Oh good. The sun has come up since and I'm liking it more in this light. I've ordered some big prints and a large clock so I'm hoping it'll feel right in no time.

Love that colour. It's the colour of our bedroom. I think it would look lovely with some extra large framed botanical prints on the walls.

LifeofBrienne · 18/01/2024 15:42

I like the botanical prints idea. And some houseplants too. Lean into it!

ASwimADay · 18/01/2024 15:52

Botanical prints and / or some gold would help. It's a lovely colour though. Is tiling or wooden slatting an option in some parts?

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/01/2024 15:53

Cream woodwork would soften the room.

averythinline · 18/01/2024 16:59

Some big prints/nice frames maybe some big houseplants....are there going to be any soft furnishings? Maybe make them warm tones... Tablecloths can be a great way to soften spaces or rug/runner
Or add pink elements goes v well with green

Seaside3 · 18/01/2024 18:46

Plants will really help here too. Layers of green can look amazing.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 19/01/2024 11:52

A frieze colour between the green wall and the white ceiling in the dining room would be my solution. Take the height from the top of the units and extend it round the room. Paint above the units in this third colour ( probably a warm cream). Ideally a picture rail ( or just a bit of beading which you can stick on with no more nails) to delineate the space.

it will even out the visual difference in proportion between the two spaces. (not such a dark cream, but you get the idea)

i love breakfast room green, i think your kitchen looks beautiful :) we have the same green in a bedroom, and we have a feature wall of Sanderson’s woodland chorus wallpaper, lots of birds and leaves- there’s a matching fabric for cushions and curtains I think- might work for you?
