What's the current day rate for decorators/painters where you live? The guy I've used in the past isn't that great and isn't cheap so I'm going to ask around for recommendations but I could be completely out of touch. I'd expect to supply paint or be billed for it separately

Mine charges roughly £100 a day to paint although he quotes for the job, not a daily rate. So the dining room took 3 days and the hall, stairs and landing took 5 days. That includes all the white paint.

21ZIGGY · 13/01/2024 18:52

150 a day

NewYear24 · 13/01/2024 18:54

£850 to paint an average sized bedroom or living room which is about 4 days.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 13/01/2024 18:59

Thank you all - last time I paid it was around >£225 a day and I really wasn't that impressed; I don't think I could do better but then I don't earn a living as a decorator.

Completely understand that most will quote for the job and that's fine - again I had to ask the guy I used to do another coat as you could still see the previous colour and he didn't appear to use any wood filler etc before doing the wood work.

We were quoted £7500 to paint our hallways from top to bottom which is three floors, including doors, skirting boards and banisters. He said it was 9/10 days work for 2 of them.
DH and I were stunned and got another quote which was £6890 - he said it would take 2 weeks, whether alone or with a buddy I never asked.
DH and I took a week off work and got it done in 6.5 days. I'm not saying it is as perfect as a professional decorator might have made it but we are very proud of our efforts and it cost us just under £400 in paints/brushes etc. and 5 days annual leave - I was surprised how easy and satisfying it was to do. I still stop and admire my stair spindles from time to time 😁

£7000 for two weeks work! That's £700 a day. Even if two of them that's still a lot!!! It's not even that difficult. Most people can paint to a good standard. I am useless practically but even I can paint a room.

WagWoofWalkMeeoow · 13/01/2024 19:21

£400 per day for a bloke & his 2 sons.

more expensive pp if 1 or 2 come.

having to wait for a booking.

Others seemed roughly the same price.

i don't mind being flexible, but it actually works out more expensive letting them fit in a day or two when they can, which I find ridiculous, when they can't book me in to do it in one go. 🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

Indeed @WhatNoUsername That was exactly our thoughts and why we did it ourselves. I am so pleased with how it looks too and we have since done our bedroom too.

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2024 19:31

£150-200/day

poetryandwine · 13/01/2024 19:46

We last worked with our wonderful painter before the pandemic and he was charging £150/day (but very good about pro-rating for shorter days). I am sure he earns more now. We are in a mid-price area of England

Thejackrussellsrule · 13/01/2024 20:08

My husband is a Decorator, he charges £200 a day, he's got overv39 years experience.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 13/01/2024 21:38

Thanks all - really helpful. I'll starting calling around for quotes but I should expect £200-250/day. I'm hoping I can find someone who does wood work - it's a 1950s house so the architraves are terribly battered and will need a lot of attention and the ceiling plaster boards need sanding to hide the seams which have settled I guess. @Thejackrussellsrule I'd be happy to hire such an experienced trade at that rate - I suspect I'd be looking at 2025 though 😀

£25 an hour in the North - but is fab at restoring door etc

SoFP · 14/01/2024 06:04

@Cluelessbutwilling wow, I will share with my husband as he hates painting but we’ve done it all ourselves so far - a 5 bed three storey house, 2 stairs & landings. We must’ve saved £20k at least so far. Currently doing eldest’s bedroom and he didn’t believe I’d earn more decorating than the office job. It looks as good as the professional job we’re painting over.

AnnusMirabilis · 14/01/2024 06:07

£250 a day here (Yorkshire).

4 days to paint one average-sized room??! Did you need four coats of paint, or were they using eyeshadow brushes?

filling in, sanding, woodwork, cornicing, ceiling fireplace, walls 3.3 m high
Easily 4 days here if the colour is changing- needs at least 3 coats to get an amazing job. The prep alone is 1 day

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 14/01/2024 09:46

It's the prep which means I don't do a good job. I can paint walls okish. What I'm not good at is the sugar soap wash, the sanding, the vacuuming, the sanding, the second wash, the filling, the sanding, the final washing.

And I'm crap at getting a nice clean line in corners/edges.

I'm also rubbish at choosing colours - I'd like a painter who could help with that too 😃

savvy7 · 14/01/2024 18:56

Just get the woodwork painted and paint the walls yourself

SugarPlumpFairy3 · 14/01/2024 20:10

ive just paid £150 for a medium sized bedroom-very happy with that.

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 14/01/2024 21:24

@SugarPlumpFairy3 wow that's so cheap. That would be half a day for my guy and I'd be paying for the paint separately - he'd be lucky to get 2 coats done in three hours, let alone the ceiling, skirting etc
