Painting the ceiling myself in double height hall- is it possible?

I’m not a bad painter- have decorated rooms in the past and done a good job.

I have a double height hall way…I think I can get to most of it with a roller from the landing, but the ceiling is really high! (About 16-18ft)

Would I be mad to attempt this myself? It it possible to do this using a roller with a really, really long handle?

( fyi - modern build/ no cornicing and planning to paint everything the same shade of white)

We have done this in our Victorian house using a roller on an extension pole.

It was fine given we were just painting everything the same colour. I wouldn't be wanting to change the colour though or do different colours on walls and ceiling.

At the end of the day what have you got to lose by trying

Thanks @Rainbowshit this is exactly the kind of motivation I needed… you are right- what have I got to lose?

Have had a lot of friends and family sucking their teeth and shaking their heads about this, but I’ll be painting over dirty white…with white!

Thanks for the link! I’m ordering now

I’ve done this. It’s possible! I also did a makeshift sellotape brush to long pole technique for the corners and edges I couldn’t do with the roller! It worked and saved me a fortune.

@Pigeonqueen thanks!

I am hoping to save a fortune with this too!

I use one of these for painting normal height rooms. It’s quicker and much easier on your back

I've done it - all white ceiling and wall, used an extension pole. Painters are so expensive - a friend just paid nearly £2k to paint her kitchen diner. I was aghast.

Extending poles are great, plus I taped a small brush to the end to go the edges 😄worked out but put lots of paper down to catch splashes.

I’ve done this too 😂 whatever works! I think patience is the key, it’s a horrible job as long as you can reach, but not a difficult one.

Dear God, I’m in the wrong job.

It's the hall, rather than the stairs? So you could use a stepladder? Nice big chunky ones are surprisingly cheap to hire.

I'm facing the same problem with my stairs, and even with a stair ladder there are bits that are unreachable, so I'm glad that sellotaping a brush to an extension pole is a tried and tested technique!

Getting anyone to come to your house at the moment involves a combination of begging and taking on a second mortgage. I have no idea why as a country we have failed to promote the trades as a good solid, well-paid job instead of obsessing over our kids getting degrees - bloody league tables, schools only boast about their university stats - kids doing subjects that might be interesting at degree level but are fuck all use when these kids need a job. Sorry for the diversion.

Have a look on You tube for tips on this - it is the fountain of all DIY knowledge.

I couldn’t agree more, it’s taken me literally years to find someone I could afford to fit a new bathroom and kitchen. I’ve been quoted 4k plus labour only for a weeks work doing a tiny bathroom. I’ve never met a poor tradesperson, and good luck to them, it’s a skilled job. I have done a small amount of paid work decorating / designing over the years and wish to God I’d taken it more seriously when I was younger, I’d probably be earning a day what I now earn a week!
