How to achieve this flooring look...

We had a flood and need to lay new floors in one of our bedrooms. I love this look but can't find any flooring that looks similar. Will this look be impossible to replicate with new floorboards / laminate?

We had those look, we just painted the floorboards. I got them to tint the white too, so it wasn't stark.

It did wear though, so if you do it, be prepared for lots of coats of paint, constant cleaning and touch ups. (Not of the fun kind).

Thanks for your reply. We will be laying new floorboards and I haven't seen any that have these little gaps in between. Maybe this is just a matter of laying them slightly spaced apart. 🤔 I would love to buy them already painted or whitewashed but any I've found have some grain / knots / marbling whereas I'm looking for pure flat white.

I used to live in a Victorian property that had gaps between the boards like that. I suspect they're like that because of age and shifting/shrinking over time rather than design, and the same may apply to the ones in the photograph. I'd really recommend not trying to replicate that look because they create drafts and end up filled with dust. When we had our floors sanded we spent a lot of time and effort filling those gaps in order to make our home warmer. Boards painted white also sound like a total pain because they're guaranteed to get chipped and marked.

Understood. This is a relatively high traffic bedroom so I guess I need to be a bit more practical and a bit less influenced by Instagram!

I think this look is called 'tongue and spider highway'

I love that look too @lollypoppy123
I'm not at home so can't check today but I got samples from a couple of companies who do similar flooring. Will post info when I get back home from relatives.

I don't have this kind of floor, but came across a company that does engineered wood flooring with this kind of gap - they call it 'Shadow Gap Flooring'. They seem to do bespoke options, so if you're thinking of painting the flooring they may do it with a cheaper wood on top, or even plywood throughout. The Scandi Ash is quite light though, almost white.

The dust accumulating in the gap would annoy me though.

These are just white painted floorboards. Floorboards are either part of the structure of your suspended floor already, or if you have a solid concrete floor, you can just get a joiner to lay floorboards on top.

We have bare floorboards in all our rooms and it's lovely. Never ever had any floor covering. It's really not draughty. You can put floor insulation underneath the boards if you like, but you don't really need to.
