What are your creative solutions for guest bed situations? I don't want a typical sofabed. I've been looking these bed in a bun/ box that look like footstools or floor cushions that turn into mattress. I don't know how comfortable they are though.

For adults I will add, not for kids.

IKEA have that sort of day bed thing with drawers that turns into a double bed- might be worth a look

@lilachouse thanks I actually like the Ikea-type day beds, but they would look too much like a sofa for me.

Murphy bed?

We have a foam cube thing from a futon company. We love it, it is super comfortable to sleep on. It's not massively practical as seating in its cube form, and it maybe looks a bit studenty, but we use it as a footstool/coffee table kind of thing in a playroom and it does fine for that. It's quite light and easy to move around the house. The rolling futon kind I'm not so sure on, I've only slept on one once and it was very hard.

Not to everyone's taste but you could consider camping beds. The really cheap, old fashioned canvas ones are underrated. They're surprisingly comfortable, if a bit small. I much prefer them to lilos though I appreciate this is a niche view. I've heard good things about the more modern X frame type, and you can get extra wide ones of those, but your guests may prefer something more solid and mattress-y.

Another idea, if you have a framed bed, might be to get a trundle that retrofits under it and just use the trundle to store a normal, spare mattress you hoike out into the living room when needed. You'd need to choose the mattress carefully to be thinnish to fit under, but light and rigid enough to be moved easily. The mattress in a box type with memory foam would be awful, they are too floppy and heavy to move. A basic foam or sprung IKEA mattress would do the job perhaps. They sell standard UK mattresses as well as the longer European standard.
