How to balance off centre bed

Have just redecorated the bedroom, not finished yet so looks a bit bare but due to needing to leave space to open the en-suite door and also for the dresser we have had to place the bed off centre.

Need some tips on making it look better than it does. What should I do with the empty corner behind the en suite door? Should I put pictures on the wall centre to the bed or centre to the wall?

I bet I can guess the comments that you're going to get...

I'd add plants, a mirror, a rug. Keep the bed central. Try to avoid adding random 'pops' of colour. See if it makes more sense to have the ensuite door opening into the ensuite so you have more space to move around in bedroom. It might not, but worth considering.

I genuinely thought your photos were black and white until I saw the curtains!

We have similar in our lounge with the sofa not being central. We blu-tacked a big piece of paper up to decide what looked right (to our eyes, not based on expert theories) and went with the picture being central to the sofa.

When I was at uni studying art, a good piece of advice was to squint at something because it simplifies what you see and can help you work out what looks right to you.

Mine is off centre too. I have a normal sized bedside table on one side and a low (bedside table height) chest of drawers on the other side. It looks good I think!

PinkflowersWhiteBerries · 10/12/2023 21:21

Picture centred above the bed for sure; will draw the eye away from the fact that the bed is off centre.

A floor lamp, lit tree/ twigs, something to create a bit of mood lighting in the corner? Or a slimline mirror ?

If budget allows, now or in future, consider replaced en-suite door with a rolling door - one of those top mounted things you see in make over shows ( only if you like them of course) Would give you more spaced and let you centre the bed.

@CurlyhairedAssassin I don’t understand what you mean by that sorry?

@Seaside3 I thought about hanging the door to open in but not possible as toilet stops it opening wide enough. The accessories aren’t back in the room yet so it won’t look as bare as it does now.

@PinkflowersWhiteBerries Rolling door is a good idea. Will have a look into this. I’m autistic so the bed being off centre is really driving me mad right now but I’ve just ordered a floor standing mirror to see if that makes it look better also.

Something central above the bed and either a large plant or tall mirror in the corner.

katmarie · 11/12/2023 20:47

Tall plant in the corner, something in a colourful pot, maybe red to compliment the curtains, and brighten it up a bit. I'd align a picture with the bed position. Also look at bifold bathroom doors, we have them on two of our bathrooms for similar space reasons.

hopeishere · 11/12/2023 20:50

Big plant in the corner and centre the picture over the bed. I take it there's no where else the bed can fit?

I think @CurlyhairedAssassin was implying that lots of people would be snooty about the grey colour scheme.

PercyPigsInBlankets · 12/12/2023 07:29

Picture over the bed, 100%. You need to make the off centre bed look more deliberate, so a picture just above the headboard will help that (not half way up to the ceiling).

The other thing that would really help is bigger lamps - whether table or wall mounted. Big lamps would help to visually “anchor” the bed in place.

determinedtomakethiswork · 12/12/2023 07:58

I think a floor-standing mirror in that corner would be a really good idea.

ohsobroody · 12/12/2023 09:16

I would make the table either side different to avoid symmetry which makes it obvious it's off centre. Large plant on one maybe and nice candle and photo the other for example

NellyBarney · 12/12/2023 15:16

I'd get a chaval mirror and place it diagonally in the corner. Pictures central to the bed, not the room.

Sproutier · 12/12/2023 16:09

I moved the light fitting in ours so it was centred over the bed. I think something in the corner like a big plant will instantly make it "make sense".

OneMiniMincePieTooFar · 12/12/2023 16:12

Agree with the suggestions for a big/tall leafy green plant in that corner

Madwife123 · 13/12/2023 01:30

@hopeishere Thanks for explaining. I don’t mind if people are snooty about grey. I’m aware it’s boring but in an a house full of autistic people boring is good.

Got some great tips so thanks everyone. Once the new things I’ve ordered arrive hoping it will look better.

Can you put the bed at the other end of the room? Do you have the dimensions of the room?

Otherwise it looks fine as is - I wouldn't have even noticed if you'd not pointed it out.
