Really big curtains ideas

We have a living room with a very high ceiling and a wall of windows that extend very high. The room is quite cold in winter and we would like to add some curtains, preferably something velvet for warmth. We need a length of 350cm and two widths to cover of 210 cm and 165cm. I'm aware this is not going to be cheap. Are there any companies that people would recommend, or would a local seamstress be the best option perhaps?

Ive found a local curtain maker in suffolk who seems to be cheaper although i have had blinds made by britannia rose as well who have a big choice of fabrics.

ive been helping my DD find curtains and dunelm have some lovely ones ready made which are not too expensive but as you need such long ones you will probably have to go with made to measure.

ebay often have second hand ones, interlined, for sale which might work.

If you trust your measuring skills this company has gorgeous fabrics made in Yorkshire with free lining fabric and offers a curtain making service. Remember you generally need to buy twice the width for generous gathers, plus extra height for matching the pattern and a deep hem if you want it.

I’m very pleased with my three large pairs of curtains from the Art Deco collection.

Secret linen company do 3m long curtains and the material looks good classy quality. I got blackout lined for the thermal warmth but I’d have preferred proper thick lined curtains. Anyway, they were the best ready made I could find for very high windows

I’ve just been browsing that site.
Printed velvet in Victorian Glasshouse design at £9 a metre…😍
Good job my home decorating days are over for the foreseeable!

Thanks all. I had googled and some of the big companies won't do the length I need, and it's great to have real life recommendations.

@bilbodog I hadn't thought about Ebay. There is a second hand curtain place in Edinburgh which is not too far from me, but it got flooded and seems to have not reopened. As curtains from big fancy Edinburgh houses would have been ideal.

Ebay is great for interlined curtains, BUT requires patience. A lot of patience....

Rainsdropskeepfalling · 05/12/2023 22:35

It may be not quite the look you're going for, but IKEA curtains are really long, very cheap and can be black out and thermal.

Sgtmajormummy · 05/12/2023 22:50

I agree with@Rainsdropskeepfalling . The IKEA curtains in 17yo DD’s room are basically the same length as the bespoke ones and far far cheaper. I just placed the pole lower.
I think IKEA goes by the idea that if they produce their curtains maximum length, people will just hem or Wonder Web them to the length they need. Not sure about the durability, though. IKEA cotton tends to go flabby, and that means shorter, when you wash it.

If OP needs a drop of 350cm then IKEA is a lost cause. They used to do 300 but recently all I have seen is 250.
350 drop is unusually long.

LadyDanburysHat · 06/12/2023 08:39

@17to35 IKEA do have some 300 or even a couple of 320, but unfortunately I need the full 350.

Thanks all who have offered company suggestions. Some are not quite as expensive as I thought they might be. So that's good.

We got curtains for patio doors from Curtains 2 Go and we love them - they have thermal lining and feel so soft. Really good quality and much better than the ones we got from Dunelm!
