Have you had a sofa reupholstered?

If so was it worth it? And how did it work - did they collect it from your home and then and deliver it all finished?

I bought a sofa over 10 years ago from a charity shop and it's the most comfortable thing ever. It is g-plan brand and feels really well made. Who knows how old it actually is. It's lasted really well but due to all our pets plus general wear and tear it now looks quite tatty.

I figure for the same price as a new sofa I could probably have this one done up like new. It's really the only sofa I've ever found to be truly comfortable so I think it could be worth it. I'm guessing it would cost £1500-£2k depending on fabric - does that sound about right? Am I mad not to just get a new one?

Yes we've had a couple of things reupholstered if it's g plan it will be worth it .

Yes and worth it for a high quality frame. Make sure they don't skimp and leave the seat cushions and even padding elsewhere, if it's necessary. Take 3 quotes and price up fabric. For a standard sofa it's probably not worth it.

Yes , last year , great experience . We had to book the sofa in after getting a quote for the work not including fabric etc . Then about 6 weeks before the date our upholsterer contacted us re fabric, he literally had hundreds of fabric books and we were able to borrow samples etc and also gave good advice in type of fabric , pattern etc. For example my dh was keen on a very large pattern on a buttoned chesterfield and he explained about losing the effect/wastage etc and in the end we settled on a similar but smaller pattern and removed the buttoning on the sofa .
On the agreed date they picked up the furniture and then when it was ready , about a week for three sofas , they delivered back .

it wasn’t cheap but so much nicer , why throw away perfectly good furniture and we now have unique sofas .

Thanks very much - I think I'll go for it. Good to know they will pick up and deliver also as I didn't fancy dealing with that myself. The style of the sofa is probably not at the height of fashion but that doesn't matter - it's comfortable and that's what counts!

My Mum did upholstery as a hobby although she never did a sofa but I grew up thinking of it as an option.

I love vintage sofas, they tend to be much better quality than modern and it's better for the environment. I've got a chaise longue I inherited reupholstered which I love, a vintage leather sofa that is in amazing nick, a reupholstered Ercol rocker and am currently looking at vintage Danish sofas to buy to get reupholstered.

I’ve just sent my parents old chesterfield chair (bought 70s) in for upholstering. They did one previously and it turned out well (for my parents) and has lasted for years. It’s a busy fabric so am having buttons removed. It’s costing around £1.5k inc collection and delivery. I was looking to buy a new chair from sofas & stuff in the same fabric and it was going to be around £2.4k. Hopefully will be worth it and it’s nice to have a piece of furniture with history.

We've reupholstered several things recently. Whether it's worth it or not depends on the cost of reupholstering vs the cost of replacement, and also how attached you are to the piece in question.
