mist coat gone wrong

I had a new bathroom fitted with all the walls and ceilings being re plastered. I am painting it myself to save on cost,

I purchased some cheap white paint and watered it doen to create a mist coat. When I started to apply it was dripping everywhere down my nice new tiles etc when doing the ceiling and onto the bath etc. I paniced and added more paint to about single to double cream consitancey, definitly thinner than normal. It went on better, but I am now worried it was too thick what can I do?

Also how long should a mist coat like that take to dry.

I’m no expert but did the same thing myself recently. The mist coat did drip a lot. I think if you’re worried you could do another coat. It took the same amount of time to dry as regular paint for me.

New plaster will suck in the paint, so I always go by how easy it is to apply, which usually means thinning by more than the recommended amount (usually 10%), so if you can't roller it on easily, it's probably too thick and will go on patchy.

It's a pain it drips everywhere, but you need to cover everything and apply several thin coats, rather than a thick coat that doesn't spread evenly.

Don't worry. The mist coat is only there to saturate the porous plaster, so that your expensive paint doesn't get sucked in later. In theory you could mist with normal paint, it's just more expensive that way. When you apply the second coat, see how evenly the paint dries. It should take 2 to 3 coats of a good quality emulsion now to get an even finish. In the future, you can buy odour and colourless plaster primer, which are still messy (you get showered in it doing ceilings) but easy to clean off tiles and floors etc.

Thanks, I have just checked the paint 14 hrs after applying it is patchy and if I rub it reasonbly hard it comes off a bit but not entirly.

Maybe give it a very light sanding with 200 grit paper to improve adhesion of your next coat. Don't worry about it being uneven and patchy at this stage.
