what colour would you paint an old pine dresser?

We have an old pine dresser in the living room, it was about 20 years old when we got it, we've had it about 10 years. It is a solid piece of furniture but not "good" in the sense of being expensive/designer.

We've had the pine/natural look for a while and want a change. Going to paint it with kitchen cabinet paint and change the knobs. If you were going to do a similar project, what colour would you paint it?

I don't think anyone can tell you as we don't know what other colours you have in your living room. I painted a pine dresser as it aged a nasty orange colour, although I did sand and re varnish the top rather than paint it, so the inevitable chips and knocks didn't show.

At the moment the living room is a very neutral stone colour, although we do plan to paint it at some point in the next year or so. Light wooden floor. I'm not that bothered about everything matching. Am veering towards dark blue.

Frenchic furniture paint; folk rave about it. I did not find it a success on my very old oak kitchen cabinets but it is great for covering pine. I've painted several pieces of pre=sanded Ducal furmiture, the knots have not come through (this can happen!)

Their Alfresco range is my go-to. They have a dark blue, I think it's called Hornblower.

Following with interest - I have inherited a pine sideboard (so much more solid and quality wood than what was affordable & new!) but the colour is a bit too warm for stone / dark wood kitchen!

I’d maybe go for a dark emerald green rather than blue. Everything is blue now.

Chartreuse

Hi @Stroopwaffels
I’d really recommend Fusion Mineral Paint. They have a gorgeous range of colours and you’re bound to see one that appeals to you. The paint is easy to use and really durable.
With FMP, you’re not supposed to need undercoat but pine can bleed through over time, especially through paler colours. I use BIN shellac primer.
There’s a Facebook page called Paint it Beautiful and you can see lots of people’s projects there for inspiration.
Oh, and change the handles/knobs to give your dresser a real upgrade.

If it were me, I would either go
super bright or deep/dark
or
sand and lime wash it.

I would wait until you redecorate your room, and then decide on a colour for the dresser.

I have a large wooden wardrobe in an alcove downstairs (white walls, light wooden floor) and painted it in F&B Studio Green (a very dark green) and upgraded the knobs / hinges to a matt brass. Think it looks lovely.

Soccermumamir · 20/11/2023 20:05

I would probably say a light grey would look nice.

I’ve just bought Frenchic stone Rosie it’s lovely and neutral so will hopefully last for few room changes!

Rustoleum have some lovely colours and you can order testers online. I have just ordered these to try before painting some bedside tables!

Just seconding this recommendation FMP is very easy to work with I use hemp oil once it’s dried which gives protection against knocks/chips Yy also use a good quality undercoat when painting wood with knots.

I love the Rustoleum. So easy to apply and looks good. I’d decorate your room first though and choose a colour for the dresser to contrast/compliment it. I find Pinterest really useful for ideas as I’m no good at coming up with good combinations on my own.
