Hi all. I still have a huge storage unit in my hall full of kids toys and crafts. They’re now teenagers so i’m clearing this out and determined to have a lovely grown up hallway. I’d love any ideas what to put in the hall please. I was thinking a modern oak sideboard but wonder if these are a bit passé! It’s quite a long hall and we do still need some kind of storage but a lot less than we’ve got now. Excuse the mountain of rubbish and clutter in the photo. It’s where I’m starting to empty the unit! I can almost imagine a lovely hall but struggling to think what to actually put in it. You’re all so clever I’d love some ideas. Ideally I’d like a bit of shoe and coat storage but I like most of them to be in the under stairs cupboard. And I can’t afford to retile it. Thank you.

Nice radiator! Are you planning on keeping the console table?

I've got a (vintage rosewood) sideboard in my hallway and it is so useful, the top drawers are where we store all the stuff DH empties from his pockets so wallets and keys and phones and suncream and sunglasses and gloves etc. We keep DVDs and CDs in the cupboards. So I'd say a sideboard is an excellent option! I have several in the house of different ages and styles and I love how much storage they have but still look elegant and give you space to display stuff as well. We have a mirror on the wall above ours and have flowers or candles on the top surface depending on the time of year. I find it's less likely to be used as a dumping ground if I've styled it. We have 3DC (11, 14 and 16) so a busy household but the hallway feels grown up.

I think your hallway could be lovely (it already has lots of natural light, space, nice skirting boards and door frames, good radiator), but IMO it needs more / better rather than less storage. Something built-in like the pictures below would be really nice and make it look really tidy and grown-up. All those shoes under the bench and next to the door are a bit unsightly.

No the console table doesn’t need to stay. I think that was originally there for a router which moved into another room literally years ago. And the printer under it is obsolete now I’m back in the office some days and can use work printers! That’s a really good point that if it’s nice and styled people won’t dump stuff on the surface. Thank you I’ll look at various sideboards

Wow those hall units are beautiful but I think they’re probably very pricey. We were planning on spending a couple of hundred pounds on something but these do look gorgeous. There are normally less shoes in the hall and I agree they do look a mess and there’s always a few handbags and shopping bags so It would be wonderful to have somewhere proper to put them. I thought a sideboard would do the trick but these are lovely like a proper country house boot room.

They do look expensive but can be done fairly cheaply if you're willing and able to do a bit of DIY. Lots of people on Instagram and interior blogs have used Ikea Pax or Ikea Method cabinets to make this sort built-in storage. Check Pinterest or Instagram for 'Ikea mudroom hack', ' Ikea Pax hack' or 'Ikea hallway hack' for pics and instructions.
