Nice looking lamp bright enough for reading

I need a lamp that's bright enough for reading in the evening, but doesn't look like a desk lamp.

All the ones I've tried warn against using brighter bulbs & just aren't bright enough for me.

Lamp needs to sit on a side table, otherwise I'd consider a standing lamp with additional reading lamp.

Any suggestions?

Why can't you use a bright bulb in a standard table lamp with a tapered shade? If it's a modern LED bulb even with a lower wattage it should be bright enough to read with? Or do you need something more directed because your eyesight isn't as good as it once was and you need a bright reading light? Also, what's your budget, the cost of a lamp is very much a 'how long is a piece of string'.

Most of the lamps I've seen have a limit on the bulb brightness you can use - I'm told this is a safety thing as brighter bulbs = more energy, plus could get too hot for the lamp/lampshade.

We have a lamp which would be ideal but it's a 40w bulb which is nowhere near bright enough to read under.

But a 12-14W LED is equivalent to 100W incandescent bulb or 1380-1600 lumens which is very bright. But the LED light won't get as hot so is perfectly safe.

That would certainly be an easy solution! I'll look into it - thanks
