Are your curtains interlined and how much difference to it make to warmth?

Just that really? Having spent a weekend at a lovely hotel with beautiful curtains I have serious curtain envy and I’m looking at mine wondering whether they could be taken apart and interlined. If it would help a lot with heat retention I will get more buy in from DH…!

urghhh! Realised I can’t edit the title. Clearly should say “how much difference does it make”

All our curtains are, they do make a huge difference and keep a lot of heat in, so I'd highly recommend

PragmaticWench · 30/10/2023 09:53

I think it does make a big difference. Definitely in a property with older windows but even with new I can feel the difference.

Hmm. I’m going to examine my curtains and see if it’s an option to add interlining. There’s little chance I can get agreement to replacement curtains unfortunately. I’m imagining it must be possible to take them apart and add the interlining before putting them back together

I like the look and feel of a heavy curtain.
All our curtains are lined and it makes a huge difference both in keeping the light out and heat in (also keeps summer heat out).
We also have shutter blinds (but that is a whole different conversation) which means even on a sunny day the rooms can be turned into darkness.

When out walking DD at night and I see (thin) curtains drawn but still allowing light through (and sometimes so transparent you can see through them) I wonder why people bother?

silentpool · 30/10/2023 10:35

I have noticed the difference -keeps heat in or out, depending on the season.

Kelta · 30/10/2023 10:37

Ours are all lined but not interlined. Curtains without any lining are surely no good at keeping heat in at all

The curtains at the hotel were like duvets..

Ours are triple lined, heavy expensive material to start with, and black out lining and also thermal lining, they are really heavy and they really keep the heat in the room.

We have a lovely flame effect fire, that costs about 10p and hour to run, after about two hours the room is so warm, we open the door and share the heat.

Exactly.
See many like this on our evening Ddog walks and I always ask myself... "Why?"

They give no meaningful privacy, do nothing to keep heat in/out so can only presume that people have them as a style accessory?

Thick, heavy curtains that need a strong curtain pole..... that is what I like. 😁

Come to my house, two curtain installers standing around sucking on their teeth as to whether the walls would take them…..😂

spitefulandbadgrammar · 30/10/2023 12:15

Haha, we moved in, hung our heavy, properly lined curtains… the track snapped under the weight. Spent a lot of budget on proper poles.

OP, instead of taking curtains apart to interline them, as a stopgap could you hang liners off the back? When I buy curtains from ebay I always add blackout curtains to them: you use hooks on the blackout liner and hook these onto the lower part of the pencil pleat tape, while the upper part is used to hang off the pole. So the pole holds the curtain and the curtain holds the liner. Have also seen blankets or interlining fabric onto the back of some pairs. It’s not quite as elegant but it is warm, and affordable.

Kelta · 30/10/2023 13:14

The poles could be an issue..

all of the curtains are already lined but I’m after the luxury slightly padded look of interlined curtains. The heat retention issue is a side issue for me really (it’s purely a mechanism to manipulate DH into agreeing! Grin)

If you can do it yourself, great! But itll not be much easier than making from scratch, sadly.

I love thick interlined curtains, but so expensive! You could stitch fleece to the (ungathered) header tape to get similar effect, without as much work.

NellyBarney · 31/10/2023 17:13

Our curtains are interlined but not padded. You'd have to specify this. Interlined just means that a piece of fabric, usually cotton or Hessian, is sewn between the curtain fabric and the (thermal or blackout) lining. You want it padded, so you want thick wadding included.

Kelta · 31/10/2023 17:16

Yes I mean the slightly padded look. Often seen with silk curtains.

I think the very glidey tracks made a difference to how luxurious they felt too.

Definitely make a difference

SqueakyDinosaur · 31/10/2023 17:37

If cost is an issue then you could buy cheap fleece blankets from IKEA, Primark, Dunelm etc and hand-stitch them into your existing curtains. I've done this before and it's still very effective.
