We've just moved into a bungalow built in the early 1960s. It's stuck in a time warp but I can't figure when. Could anybody date this style of kitchen, it's winchmore if that's any help. Would the brick fireplace be original? What era are the shelves? Any insight greatly received, many thanks.

I’d say original fireplace, from when house built, kitchen from 1980s or late 70s, shelves likely in between. Source: was born in 1965 and have been going to people’s houses since I was little 😉

MaydinEssex · 23/10/2023 21:16

I'd say mid 80's, I remember my parents having a similar kitchen put in like that in 1985, I lived in a house that was built around 1983, I moved in there 2003 and had a fireplace like that.

Delphigirl · 23/10/2023 21:17

Kitchen 1984

FirstFallopians · 23/10/2023 21:18

Can you not ask that terrifying doll on the shelf when it comes to life in the middle of the night?

Applerumleandcustard · 23/10/2023 21:20

I’d say early 80s , as the kitchen looks very similar to the one we had when we moved into our do me upper bungalow which was built in the early 80s

we have a huge chimney breast , about the same size but plastered , not block with a massive marble fire place ( which is going next year 🤞)

McCartneyMather · 23/10/2023 21:20

Brick fireplace 1986.

LadyWithLapdog · 23/10/2023 21:24

Kitchen and shelves mid 80s. Fireplace about the 70s.

Mrsgreen100 · 23/10/2023 21:24

Definitely early 80’s

This is exactly what I thought.

Crying with laughter here!! 😂

I would say mid to late 1980s based on the kitchen cabinets

peppermintcrisp · 23/10/2023 21:31

Maybe ask the man in the mirror?

peppermintcrisp · 23/10/2023 21:31

...not the doll, the other one.

Mudflaps · 23/10/2023 21:32

80's. My parents had a similar looking extremely expensive solid wood kitchen fitted in the 80's, their kitchen is huge but dark and that kitchen is still there, still in really good condition but so dark. I'd love to paint it but they've got matching table and chairs.

BestIsWest · 23/10/2023 21:34

Kitchen mid to late 80s though the handles make me think it might be early 90s.

We have a similar but smaller fireplace which dates from 1970 but I remember my DM having one built in around 1987 so could be any time in that period.

FloofCloud · 23/10/2023 21:35

Definitely 1980's

Lavenderosa · 23/10/2023 21:38

The kitchen is probably 1990s, the stone wall could be original or added in the 1970s. The shelves could be anytime but probably 1980s - 1990s.

PenelopePlant · 23/10/2023 21:39

I thought it was probably mid 80s to 90s. Thank you for all the input. We won't be in any rush to change it, it's such good quality and in fantastic condition. The fact it's probably 40 years old is wild.

Early 90s.

Disagree with anyone saying any earlier than that.

The dark cement in the fireplace is the giveaway for me.

It's immaculate for its age.

they certainly don't make them like that anymore!

Coffeesnob11 · 23/10/2023 21:59

I have just knocked out a similar fireplace and have the same kitchen. My house was built in 1965. I know the fireplace isn't original as I found the original wallpaper behind it so I guess the fireplace is late 70's and the kitchen early 80's. Mine has a green sunk and worktops. I also have amazing quality dark red carpet everywhere.

I disagree, my father built a similar fireplace using granite in the 70's, it was there til early 00's, he tinted the cement before pointing it.

Deadringer · 23/10/2023 22:06

I got this exact kitchen, including the key style handles, in 1996. Fireplace looks earlier to me.

C8H10N4O2 · 23/10/2023 22:06

Kitchen - 80s
Fireplace and stone work - early 70s, there was a rage for this internal stonework
Offset shelves - were very fashionable in the era of "mid century" furniture which to me is 60s/50s design. Before Habitat came along and made square angled pine, metal, and glass tables the order of the day.

LividGas · 24/10/2023 07:47

That kitchen would look ace painted, if you wanted to refresh it…

I remember "helping" my dad build a very similar fireplace in the 70s. I do not believe anyone would have built that style of fireplace in the 90s. Not with those little niches. The actual fire is more recent though.
