Hi,
I am planning to do some DIY before Christmas and need to make my living room more colourful. This is the first time I will be painting the walls and hallway so your help with what to buy. The list so far is I think need is

-sand paper
-tape
-paint tray
-paint brush
-roller handle
-paint roller
-sugar soap
-spirit
Do I need to use primer too? I will be painting olive greens and the room is magnolia painted with white doors.

thank you so much for your help.

Dust sheets

Second the dust sheets .

You probably won't need primer for olive green over magnolia.

You may not need the sandpaper if the walls are in decent condition. If you sugar soap and have a good quality paint (honestly, do yourself a favour and buy a branded paint... having done a wall art thing in one room using various different sample pots from different brands, I can safely say there is absolutely no point buying cheap paint as it takes you 8 times as long and you need 3 times as much and I honestly wish I'd never started with the own brand stuff.... my motto is now just buy the dulux! Valspar is ok but I prefer thicker paint personally... I find it more satisfying to roller and less drippy).

If you literally have no stuff, I would add a small stepladder to that list, it will make your life much easier.

Also clingfilm - can wrap rollers and brushes between coats and they will stay wet and useable.

Find a good stick (like an old wooden chopstick or something similar ) to stir the paint with.

I have a lot of love for the roller sets which also have the mini rollers as well as the big ones, we have some very awkward rooms and they made them much easier.

Oooh, I bloody love a bit of DIY.... share how it turns out!

Primer is for painting bare wood. You might want some under coat for the woodwork, but if it is in good condition then I wouldn't bother

Spirit is for oil based eggshell and gloss. You want water based paints. Some babywipes will do for that, and just washing up liquid and warm water. I like to use large rollers with a long handle and a large high, spill proof tray on the floor. You then hold the roller like a mop, roll it through the paint and then almost paint half a wall in 1 go. Saves a lot of time and effort. Get small, angled cutting in brushes, it saves battling with masking tape.

Thank you so much everyone, this is really helpful. I’m going to start painting from Monday.

Filler for cracks/holes
Rags/paper towels for cleaning up mistakes (I use a damp one on the skirting board)
Rubbish bags/large plastic bags. Useful to put under paint cans/trays to catch drips. Also you can line the roller tray with a bag/cling film and just throw out the liner- saves you from having to wash the tray.
