What kind of rug should I get

We've had a move around of our house and need a new rug for our living room.

Walls are a pale blue/grey
Sofa is a lime/mossy green and the blinds contain both of those colours. Carpet is neutral cream/beige.

It's an odd shaped room in that it is quite long and narrow, so it kind of splits into two.

We have a soda, snuggler chair, fireplace and TV unit which form four sides of a square.

We have an expanse of carpet in front of the fire. Floor space of the square is about 170 by 130 - so not huge.

I would like a rug. I feel like it needs to be a small rug as will look swamped if it is one that the furniture sits on. Feels like the space is too small for something too bold but worry neutral will just look boring and grey won't go at all.

Style of room I would describe as 'mid/century modern'

All help gratefully received. I don't want to spend a fortune on something that looks silly or too much.

My main dilemma is now to decide what size.

I know you said you think it needs to be small, but imho a rug looks silly unless it is large enough to sit under - at least - the front feet of any sofa or other furniture in the space. But that's just my opinion, obviously.

We have rugs in every room (except the bathroom etc) and they're all fairly large. We've purchased them from a mix of ebay, Liberty, a specialist vintage rug seller, Homesense and Irugs, but our style is very eclectic! Places such as Dunelm, John Lewis or even Next usually have a good choice, particularly of the smaller sizes. There's also Ruggable, but I'm personally not keen on the idea of those from what I've heard - although the designs look good.

Colour-wise, I wouldn't go for anything plain but would try to find one that picks up on the colours you have throughout the room - blinds, cushions, lamps etc. Persian style rugs are usually a good fit with most interior styles and these days the contemporary ones come in a range of colours not just the traditional reds/blues. We were very fortunate to find a huge antique Persian rug in an unusual colourway (olive, pink, teal etc) from a specialist dealer a few years back. I would browse a few sites - or look in Homesense/TK Maxx - to get a feel of the styles/patterns you are attracted to.....

I'm going to draw you a plan.

It's an awkward shaped room because of the position of the door. And the bay windows (as it's a long narrow room.

So the sofa fits perfectly in the bay.

It's really not to scale but you get the drift.

The other bay (opposite the piano) has a drinks table in it.

I've never been able to get a furniture configuration that worked.

We have a similar layout and have a rug that partly goes under the sofa (I agree with the previous poster re very small 'freestanding' rugs looking a bit lost. We have a side table on it too.

I like the picture you've posted. It's quite busy though - will it work with the other elements of the room?

fruitstick · 15/10/2023 14:01

So it's not in the middle? 🤯.

Maybe that will help the room look bigger - if it's not symmetrical.

You're right, it is too busy but is the sort of thing I like.

I;d have a sllightly less busy pattern and big - so it goes from the very edge of sofa over to the tv and lenghtways right under the two chairs - otherwise it would look bitty. If you have the rug even less patterned you could put a coffee table in front of chairs and sofa without it looking too busy, if you wanted to.

fruitstick · 15/10/2023 15:51

This one from Dunelm is 200 x 290

So it would go under the sofa and up to the smuggler but stop short of the TV unit

Not sure I want something that big and plain but size wise is that what I'm looking for.

I can't really help with the size as tend to prefer rugs infront of the fire so they are typically smaller than what you are looking for .

What I will say is if you have or are thinking of getting a robot vac avoid rugs with tassels or fake fur floofy ones as the robot vac will get stuck on them .
Guess how I know this 🙄

Because I love pattern, I don't dislike the busyness of the first one although it's not my kind of style at all. However, I would caution against buying a rug with too high a profile for trip hazard purposes.

I've become used to stepping up onto the Liberty one in our bedroom and because I love it, I'm prepared to overlook the minor inconvenience ....but it's definitely not as thick as the ones you've posted appear to be. Otherwise, our rugs (we've got seven throughout the house) are mostly fairly short pile which is easier to live with imho.

Thick fringed edges can also be problematic as with our jute rug which has fluffed up in the fringed area due to being it being where we walk through the space.

This is our living room rug. You can see how huge it is in the space (it was purchased when we had a significantly larger house 🙄) - there's roughly 40cm of exposed floor on three sides, with a wider expanse of floor beneath/behind the love seat whose front feet just sit on it. Excuse the unfinished floor, we're about to lay LVT!

Pic didn't attach, I'll try again.
