The current rail is damaged and needs to be removed and replaced. I can’t obviously see how it was originally installed/attached. Please tell me it’s a straightforward job? What tools do I need?

It is probably just nailed on.

Try to get a flat screwdriver behind in one corner and see if you can prise it off.

Are you going to replace it with a new rail?

I took one off & it was unexpectedly easy. As PP said, it was a few nails & glue.

If it's really stuck on you may need a bit of filler, but IME not a big job.

Yes going to replace it with a new one. Well, try to! It’s just so very hard to get tradesmen out at the moment. And then even if they say they’ll come out, they just don’t turn up. It’s terrible round here at the moment.

Ah thank you, I’ve heard horror stories about it taking out chunks of plaster!!

We removed a dado rail in our bathroom a few years ago and it was really easy. Just prized a small part off first then the rest came away with practically no damage. We just gave the walls a light sand and they were fine to paint over. Earlier this year I regretted it and we’ve just put one back on! It’s really easy to do yourself if you’ve got the right tools.

Well I am very pleased with myself, I used a hammer and a wallpaper scraper and they came off beautifully! With zero damage to the wall plaster!

I now have a 50mm high channel that needs to be filled before I attach the new rail. Can I use a plaster repair kit for this?
