Good quality sofas that don't cost the earth?

We are looking to replace our m and s leather sofas which we've had for nearly 20 years. They've been great, they are just looking tired and after all the wear the leather is really not great. Plus they are slightly too bulky for our living room really, I've known this a long time but carried on.

Where can I look for a good quality sofa that will last us 15-20 years, won't date too much and doesn't cost multiple thousands?

I've just no idea who makes stuff to last now. So many people seem to change their sofa every year or two, I don't want to do this.

Ideally I think I want a corner sofa, enough to fit 5 or 6 comfortably. Our current sofa is high backed and sided so you really sink into it, very comfy but this does make it bulky! I need timeless and comfy!

Any ideas much appreciated!

Bumping as I am looking to renew my sofas soon.

Ikea

What’s your budget op?

Tereseta · 07/10/2023 12:31

I need a new sofa and am struggling with this. We have an ikea armchair that is ten years and going strong.

We bought our sofa - sofa-bed actually - 12 years ago from a local specialist shop. Excellent quality for £1400. Really hard wearing fabric, lovely colour, made to order. I chose a style with lots of cushions, so I can change the look every now and again by switching to some different cushions.

Still looks great and will no doubt last at least another twelve - or twenty - years. And the shop will re-upholster it if we want. Just bought a similar sofa from the same shop for £1150 (without bed) for my son.

There will probably be a similar shop somewhere in your neck of the woods.

You've answered your own question... M&S! I've got an armchair that seemed expensive at the time but I've had it for 20 years and just plan to get it reupholstered if it ever needs it.

Otherwise, I would recommend getting a classic shape at DFS or John Lewis.

It depends on your budget.

cellarst · 07/10/2023 12:55

Our John Lewis sofas look 50 years old after 5. I really wouldn't recommend them.

Justkoko · 07/10/2023 13:01

Are m and s still good quality?

A couple of the midcentury sofas at ikea are OK, but looks like they are built out of particleboard, which doesn't sound longlasting, I'd read you should go for hardwood. Plus some of the cushions don't seem to last well according to the reviews.

Budget, I'd rather not be going over 1500, it depends really. Not loaf prices anyway unfortunately!

Ive just bought 2 alexander and james chairs which seem good quality - made in thailand though (if you care). My old sofa is a still going strong tetrad after nearly 20 years - they are a bit expensive but a lot of stores seem to have sales on at the moment.

I have recently moved house and have discovered the world of returns. There’s a whole industry set up to resell stuff that is returned to the seller with nothing wrong with it. I’ve just bought a sofa for 30% less than retail from one of these places. Also went and had a look at some random place on on industrial estate that had John Lewis / m and s etc refurbished or returned for about 60% less than retail. This was West Yorkshire so might be worth googling near you to see if there is similar.

Avoid Next.

Ikea - get one with washable covers and it will last ages. You can get a spare set of covers too.

Janieforever · 07/10/2023 13:40

Thing is for 1500 for 6 seats and long lasting you’re asking a lot, as you’re at the low end of budget ranges. Would you consider interest free credit? You could put say 100-1500 down and pay the rest interest fee over 3 years , so something like this would then be bout 30 quid a month,

Sofa.com

We’ve had a couple of sofas and a couple of beds from them over the last 10 years and they are all great

Our latest sofa was bought after they got bought out by Sports Direct, and I don’t think the quality has dipped

And their after sales is really good. I ignored the dry clean only label on a sofa cushion, washed it and shrank it, and they were very helpful and sold me a new one for something very reasonable like £20

If you can go to their showrooms, they give our free brownies and Prosecco or coffee while you walk round

We got our last one from Sofology, happy with it so far.
