Massive artwork - what would you choose?

I need to buy a very large print or canvas to cover a bunch of cabling from a wall mounted tv the previous homeowners had.

I am RUBBISH at knowing what to put on our walls, nothing really fits together and I just don't think I have good taste.

It has to be square and ideally 100x100cm ish.

What sort of thing would you choose? The room is an open plan kitchen living space so could be foodie themed or otherwise. I quite like "poster" style art, or pieces with a bit of humour but I don't want it to look tacky. I've been browsing Fy and Canvas Art Rocks and I'm totally overwhelmed.

Help appreciated!!

The brief is too wide.

What is your colour scheme / taste / interests?

Can you post a few examples of images you do like, even if the size or proportion is wrong?

I would choose a really nice piece of fabric, hem it, hang it over a piece of thick dowel.

This would cost almost nothing, and you can fit it to exactly the right size.

those would be my two choices

Good point, sorry! Currently the walls are boring magnolia, the kitchen is cream with black counter tops. Other colours through furnishings are burnt orange and yellow.

I've attached a few things I liked, but they're the wrong shape and I worry that in such a large size, something like this would look weird!

I'm not a huge abstract fan usually although they do seem to work well as large pieces.

Do you have a budget in mind?

EvelynSalt · 05/10/2023 22:18

Love the idea of making something myself...will explore!

Probably up to a couple of hundred pounds, not much

The daffodils are the most tasteful, imo

John Lewis and Dunelm are usually good for big canvases at a reasonable price!

I like these two websites for prints but they can get expensive when you factor in the frames -

I’m going to get this for my new kitchen, there’s just something about it that cracks me up - https://reignandhail.co.uk/product/custom-hometown-print/

Also if you have time, try local small galleries for inspiration, probably not an original piece (£££) but a print!

Oh I love the Tom Hammick print, thank you! Right up my street.

And the Milan, Paris, "insert town" is brilliant - love it!

Thank you all, some great ideas.

Have you looked online at Ikea- they have lots of posters/large black and white photos that can look good? We have a huge one of streets and roof tops in New York- taken in 1960s. We've had it about 15 years and it is always commented on because it's interesting. They do different sizes in lots of them.

Make your own canvas by acrylic paint pouring. It's pretty simple, fairly cheap and can match your preferred colours.

Oh, please don't suggest that!

I can’t recommend going on EBay buying something direct from the artist/ antique painting highly enough. You get absolute bargains and so much nicer than mass produced prints. There’s a filter box where you can choose the size too.
