currently in the kitchen its solid wood work top, with upstand, then tiles up the wall and round the back of cooker hob

I am going to replace the tiles and work top as its seen better days , am thinking about just putting the tiles down to worktop , or is there a benefit of the upstand between the tiles and work top

dont want splashback as prefer tiles

thanks

Yeah upstands basically protect the wall (or tiles in some cases) from getting knocked and damaged by pans and things. They are also a nice design feature when done right.

Worktop fitters prefer upstands as they cover any gaps between the worktop and wall (few walks are perfectly straight). We went for splashbacks in the same quartz as the worktop, they were 2cm thick, the same thickness as upstands, and so covered any gaps. Another advantage was that installation took about 20 min, so much quicker than tiling. And no grout that gets dirty over time.

If you tile down to worktop then that should hide imperfections as worktop meets tile, not wall, unless its very wonky.
The grout will be harder to keep clean where it meets worktop, but nig impossible.
