Advice on bedroom decoration to match curtains

I have bought bedroom curtains in this rather bonkers parrot fabric- I realise loads of people will hate them but I love them!

However, I now have absolutely no idea how to decorate the rest of the room - it's the master bedroom with a king size bed, mid grey carpet (not changing this), white built in wardrobes that take up one of the shorter walls, and IKEA Malm drawers in dark brown. Somehow I also have amassed various pictures of birds, as I like birds. Room is east facing with a large window and hence a lot of curtain.

I would love to go for some colour on the walls, not beige as at present or light grey as that's too similar to the background of the curtains and we have neutrals everywhere else in the house, but what? Turquoise, pink or green from the curtains? Pale or darker? One accent wall or stick to the same for the three walls? Then what colour do I get for the bedding? I do have a plain white duvet cover, which I could use as is with a throw, or dye.

And do I just go all out with the bird theme and group the bird pics into a picture wall?

Also there are two ceiling lights, each with a 3 arm gold light fitting- too many bulbs for a bedroom and the fittings are more like a living room, but would it look weird with two simple pendants and shades (glass, fabric, wood, other?), or perfectly normal? I don't want to change to one fitting as it is quite a big room and there is artex (with asbestos) which will be pricey to skim. Then do I have to match the bedside lights to the ceiling?

So many things to think about and I just don't know where to start, so really hoping someone else might please be able to set me off on the right track!

How abt dark grey?

Enko · 18/09/2023 07:21

I love those curtains.

I would pick up the yellow/green from the parrots and do one wall in that keeping the rest more neutral. Dark grey like suggested above could work. If really brave do the entire room in the yellow/green. 🙂but much depends on the size and light in that room.

GOODCAT · 18/09/2023 09:18

Really like the curtains. I would paint the walls the same neutral colour as the background on the curtains and have bedding the same, but then add the same colour as the parrots to the rest of the room via accessories. I would include some black too.

Also do have plenty of birds elsewhere in the room.

PureAmazonian · 18/09/2023 09:39

I would pick one of the deeper tones in the birds colours, the deeper green or blue for the accent wall behind the bed. Like jewel tones. I think the brighter turquoise or green on the wall would give it a childish feel. You could always be a bit more playful with the brighter colours in the cushions on the bed, bedding etc.

I've attached a photo below just as an example of what I mean. Not sure I've explained all that well! 😂

I couldn't live with that fabric!

I would spend the whole time having to stop my impulse to colour the rest in!!

I'm not sure what wall colour ud go with. I like white for simmer & a dark blue for winter!

Thanks all! Glad that some other people like the curtains too. I wouldn't put them in a living room but I thought in a bedroom I could get away with it.

Other people always seem to get dark grey right but I'd probably choose the wrong shade and make it look a bit gloomy with the grey carpet too; I tried a spare room in light grey and it's quite dull albeit doesn't have the "pops" of other colours - I think I'd prefer something a bit brighter colour-wise.

But I note the point about not wanting it to look like a child's room, so choosing the correct shade carefully (I've got one of those to do too; she wants blue and I'm thinking how to do that without it looking too cold) That was what I was worried about with matching the blues and pinks from the curtain as they are a bit neon, but taking the darker jewel colours could work - I do love teal, so maybe I could match the blue to a paint card and go for a darker version of the same shade for the accent wall.

Good idea about bringing in some of the other colours in the cushions, bedding, lamp shade etc, so not just sticking with one colour as the theme. I'm not sure I'm a huge fan of the particular shade of yellow/green (I wish it was more emerald shade as then I'd be sorted as I'd just use that as my main colour) as I'd be worried it might look a bit vomity if used on the walls for a large area but would look rather good on some of the smaller trimmings. I should try an online room visualiser with it though, as it could be one of those colours that surprises me, and a trip to TKMaxx to find out what bits they have that I could add in.

the example photo is exactly the sort of thing I aspire to, but would never successfully achieve. That dark colour make it look very grand to my eye, but I'm not sure I'm brave enough to go so dark.

Which way does your room face?

Which way does your room face?

It's east facing, with a large window, so very light first thing in the morning but still quite bright throughout the day. The en-suite is west facing at the west end of the room, so some light also comes through the door to that.

I’d pick a green blue which is on the top right hand parrots tail feathers, and do all walls. I think one accent wall and the curtains will be too confusing.

that blue green will blend with the furniture, carpet and curtains.

That's a good idea to consider, the tail feathers are actually more of a blue-grey in reality which quite calming and a bit less in-your-face / more grown up than the turquoise and could therefore work quite well for the whole room.

I also noticed that the dark turquoise used for the markings on the feathers is quite a nice shade too, not too bright, so that might be worth thinking about.

I’m personally not a fan of strong vibrant colours in the bedroom - I prefer calmer colours. I like the treatment of this room because although the curtains are quite lively everything else is quite neutral. Pale blues, greys, greens are all quite restful for walls in a bedroom… I like a murky pink too. Your east facing room will have a cooler ( bluer) light so you might want to consider choosing a warmer shade ( grey for example can be cooler when it has more blue in it or warmer with more brown). I don’t mind dark walls in a bedroom but I think they should be matched with deep colours not fresh colours …. Just my preference. You could break up the carpet with a rug at the end of the bed or under the bed and introduce either tonal or pattern clashing throws or cushions on your white bedding. I’ll find a pattern clash picture.

Divebar2021 · 18/09/2023 15:30

The pattern clash here is in the accessories so it would be easy to change it if you wanted - or have a winter / summer scheme. ( im
not suggesting this scheme but just looking at the way the way the accessories have changed a pretty neutral space) Oh and the bird pictures I might do a grouping above the bed if the space was sufficient.----

Divebar2021 · 18/09/2023 15:32

I prefer the first approach but I guess you need to consider the overall style of your house and furniture.

Divebar2021 - I like your choice of words - calmer, restful, deep colours - that is the feeling I want to get. I like the way the neutral backgrounds combine with the "louder" patterns on the accessories in the photos you've shown, and the tropical touches with the dark wood and the rattan (?) fittings. In fact, I wonder if the wall colours in the second photo, or similar, could work quite well with my curtains - I like the fact there is a feature wall but it is not too bold.

Overall style of the house - not sure there is one yet! Unless Ikea combined with 80-year-old-lady counts (we "inherited" various furniture and living room curtains from the previous owner - good quality esp the curtains and we needed more furniture than we had before to fill the space, but not exactly to my taste - but not worth replacing until we know what to do with the place in terms of knocking through etc)

Thanks to all who gave me ideas for my bedroom. I haven't painted yet, but made a trip down to Home Sense on the weekend and picked up some dark teal cushions and a grey-teal throw for £50 all in, swapped my coloured bedding for the white duvet cover and rearranged the pictures to look purposely located rather than on whatever hooks were there when we moved in - as a result the room looks 200% better, it looks like some thought (all of yours!) has gone into it, even without painting or changing lampshades.
