Looking for recommendations to buy solid wood flooring online please.

We didn't go with wooden flooring as wooden flooring, no matter how much resistance you put in it can dent. We went with Amtico flooring and haven't looked back since.

Agree with @Sh33tuC87. Amtico all the way.

@Viewfrommyhouse it is the best thing isn't it!!

We’ve picked Woodpecker engineered wood in a herringbone pattern for the combination of real wood plus more strength. I’m not a fan of lvt and we can always sand the floor every few years if needed. We had pure wooden flooring downstairs in our old home and it wore well but we inherited it so didn’t know the brand. We are trying engineered for the first time so fingers crossed it is the right choice

I wanted engineered wood originally, but every flooring shop I went to suggested that it wouldn't really suit our lifestyle (kids, pets, shoes downstairs and the farm outdoors being dragged indoors). Really happy with it. It seems impervious to abuse so far and mops clean very easily. We had Karndean in a previous house but I wasn't so keen on it. Amtico seems to be worth the extra money so far.

Thanks everyone. I really love solid wood flooring, why wouldn't this be suitable?

It scratches, it dents, it's not v tolerant of water, it requires more care and maintenance. Which rooms do you want it in?

It's for a lounge into dining room. Does anyone have any info re difference between Amtico and Karndean?

Ted Todd solid wood is very good. Bombproof. As for not being conducive to normal family life, that’s rubbish. Look at all the gastro pubs with flagstones and solid wood flooring. John Lewis stores have real wood flooring. The barn I’m currently staying in which hosts dogs and noisy families has wide farmhouse planks. If you like the ‘look’ of Amtico, go for it-I’d use it in bathrooms, for example, but it will never match the warmth and character of wood. In my old house, I got Kahrs engineered wood-at the time I had a dog with long claws so was a bit nervous but it was great.

Solid wood is less stable than engineered wood - and far more expensive!

I have engineered wood in my lounge and I love it. Yes, it does get the odd little scratch on it but that’s the nature of wood! I have had Amtico in the past and although it wears well, it does feel plastic.

I've got engineered oak in the dining room part of my kitchen diner. It's the room we live in the most, and is where the big clattery dog lives. We're outdoorsy so continuously traipse in mud and water. We've had it down for a year now and it still looks brand new.

Most of our other rooms are original floorboards, which we sanded and oiled when we moved in a few years ago and have left since then. Also fine - but the joys of original wood floors is that they are already a bit beaten up, so you don't need to worry too much!

No particular care taken over it - hoovered two or three times a week and mopped once a week with a spray mop with wood cleaner in it.

Amtico etc. looks practical, but personally I much prefer the look and feel of wood and so far have found it to be pretty hardwearing. Most

What kind of heating will you have in those rooms?

Karndean seems to have a bit more of a sheen to it/smoother. The Amtico we chose has a textured finish to it (barnwood). We have wet UFH throughout our downstairs which LVT works really well with.

I decided on solid wood throughout ground floor, except bathroom. It looks absolutely amazing and I love it. With wood you do have to learn to accept that it will scratch and dent a little over time because you’ll inevitably drop something, but that is different to how damage on an LVT or engineered panel will look. There is also the option of sanding down and refinishing in future. Think about you lifestyle, I live alone and have no kids and one cat. I also don’t wear outdoor shoes inside. It’s properly finished, so getting a bit of water on it is not so much of a problem.

I did consider LVT, but I do think it looks like LVT, it can also feel hard and cold.

alongwayback · 30/08/2023 13:07

Thanks all that's really helpful. It's not a huge space and we won't have underfloor heating.

What I don't like about LVT is from what I've seen it looks plasticky. I lost love natural solid wood.

We had solid wood parquet put in a few years ago, I personally like the long term versatility - sanding, staining, hopefully a floor for life.

I'd love to know who supplied your solid wood floor if you're able to share, and if you have any pics, please share! Currently going through all the decision-making - the other types of wood sound so practical, but like you I just love the sound of the real thing!

Ketzele · 07/06/2025 14:13

I've just had engineered wood put down. I have LVT in other parts of the house and it's fine, but I prefer wood. Yes, it will scratch and dent, but IMO wood is the only flooring that still looks good a bit battered.

Question- what are you using to clean it bar the actual Mario flooring solution? I’m finding things like flash etc make the floor sticky!

I just use hot soapy water!

Aaaaaaaaawwwwwww · 23/12/2025 20:56

I’m with you on the wood vs LVT.
I tried to convince myself on LVT as it is more practical. However it did feel plasticky and cold. I went for engineered as a compromise and for price, but agree that real wood is gorgeous
