Help me to pick a Ruggable rug

Buying one in the biggest size to (finally!) cover a horribly scratched engineered wood floor in our sitting room.

Our walls are white, with various bits of furniture that are primarily oak with a bit of muted gold. Sofa is "raspberry rhondite" (a dark dusky pink https://twitter.com/the_lounge_co/status/1437846219158609923), lamps hanging over the sofa are gold and dark green, prints are largely black/white typography or photography.

Importantly, house is mid-century and open plan, and I try to honour that where I can - we've lived in Victorian cottages before and our furniture from there looks fundamentally ridiculous in this much more linear space.

My shortlist is:
https://ruggable.co.uk/products/jonathan-adler-inkdrop-black-ivory-rug?size=150x215

https://ruggable.co.uk/products/morris-and-co-blackthorn-ivory-rug?size=150x215

https://ruggable.co.uk/products/jonathan-adler-op-art-teal-rug?size=150x215

I can imagine all of them working - the Inkdrop picks up the monochrome prints, the Morris and co would probably need to be hoovered least and it picks up the pink in the sofa (but is probably the least in keeping with the house's general style) and we both like the Op Art rug, but there's a fair bit of blue in it that isn't anywhere else in the room and I wouldn't have otherwise introduced it - I'd be picking up the green in the lamps if I was looking for another colour.

I've had all three in my basket for weeks now, and need to get on with it. DH is at the point where he never wants to have another rug-themed conversation with me. HELP ME PLEASE.

Why aren't you sanding back the floor?

Soontobe60 · 27/08/2023 13:17

I’d go for the second one. The other 2 would give me migraines!!! The middle one would suit your sofa well, and not show the odd crumb or stain as much as the pother two.

Iwiicit · 27/08/2023 14:47

Number 1 and number 3 are hellish. Anyone who gets migraines would end up being sick in your living room. Number 2 is lovely and matches the sofa colour.

LibertyLily · 27/08/2023 15:29

Another vote for number 2 as I'm also getting a headache looking at numbers 1 and 3.

Some of the reviews would worry me slightly, although we bought a very large rug from irugs and their reviews weren't great. We had no issues apart from a few creases which soon disappeared.

sheworemellowyellow · 27/08/2023 15:48

You NEVER want a rug that's got unpatterned bits on it. Every bit of fluff, every crumb, every bit of string and thread - just EVERYTHING shows up. You'd be better off with your scratched floor. Learned this the hard way.

I'd go for the second one for this reason. There's a reason why these paisley patterned rugs have sold so well for centuries!

Also agree that ruggable is unexceptional, overpriced advertising. Just get a decent quality rug from anywhere.

Inkdrop.

The Morris will look twee in a C20 house, and the Op Art one makes my eyes go funny. It seems funky but you'll end up hating it. I also question whether the colour match with the sofa will be quite right, and if it's a bit out it will look rubbish.

Workbabysleeprepeat · 27/08/2023 17:55

Inkdrop

Aworldofmyown · 27/08/2023 18:00

Favourite is 2, but if it won't go, then definitely 1.

Bluebellsarepink · 27/08/2023 19:12

I love the second. I really don't like the third, the first is ok but not to my taste.

Missingmyusername · 27/08/2023 19:28

Rug 2 but you say it doesn’t go.
I think rug 1 is too modern, along with rug 3.

Are you planning to wash it?

AcetoneForMyPhone · 27/08/2023 21:02

No. 2 !

maybebalancing · 27/08/2023 21:07

I like three best.

PoliticallyIncorrectHitchling · 28/08/2023 07:38

First one, Dont think 2nd one will go with furniture and 3rd one will give me a headache

BigButtons · 28/08/2023 07:42

Number 2 is the least offensive

lastminutewednesday · 28/08/2023 08:33

I've been after that Jonathan Adler one for a year! Still hovering over buying it! So I'd go with that one!!

lastminutewednesday · 28/08/2023 08:34

The first one sorry

Tinkerbellflowers · 28/08/2023 08:38

Second one. I love my Ruggable rug. It goes in the washing machine easily and dries very quickly.

StoatofDisarray · 28/08/2023 08:47

The reviews that look genuine are awful: I wouldn't take the risk, OP.

HerculesMulligan · 28/08/2023 15:15

Because I think that's already been done and our baby gate has gouged a massive hole out that probably too deep for sanding. If we could afford it we'd be lifting it and replacing it, but I've got a few dodgy windowframes to replace first.

I'm intrigued by the Ruggable concern, because I asked on my FB and got loads of very, very positive responses. To the point where my architect cousin is thinking of getting some for her home purely on the strength of my friends' reviews.

I love the Scandi rugs linked to upthread, but the room is 478cm x358cm, and I want it to go fairly close to the walls (to cover the aforementioned gouging). It's been such a hassle to find one that is:

  1. big enough
  2. not jute (DS9 is autistic and won't handle the texture)
  3. not going to cost a million pounds
  4. reasonably hardy/washable

I was hoping for the lovely herringbone type that Weaver Green do but they don't go big enough.

Sorry, I thought I was quoting an earlier poster when I said "That's already been done" - I was referring to the idea of sanding it.

Just not the 3rd one (teal rug) I like the colours but it actually hurts to look at.

Fourfurrymonsters · 28/08/2023 15:59

With 4 dogs Ruggable sounded like an excellent solution for us. We bought the biggest size for our lounge and it was a monumental waste of money. It felt like walking on empty crisp packets with a towel on top, and my Dyson just wanted to sook it up (tried all the settings possible). Also the rug advertised as a cream background, was a dingy grey. Couldn’t for the life of us lay it flat without creasing and the underlay thingy left black fibres everywhere. Ended up with 2 gorgeous wool John Lewis rugs instead which are wearing very well, and the Ruggable literally went in the skip as it was fit for nothing. I’m still pissed about it.

Snugmummy · 28/08/2023 16:03

I have 3 of the largest size rugs and they fit in my washing machine and come up really lovely- I either hang them over the washing line or drape them over 3 bar stools and if I wash them last thing at night they are dry by morning. I hesitated for ages before buying the first one as I thought they must be too good to be true, but I absolutely love them. I have 2 very active dogs and I wouldn’t buy any other rugs now- took a lot of stress out of puppy training. I really like the texture too- they have a good few deals through the year so I always wait for one to get my next one. You won’t regret it! I haven’t said which one of yours I prefer as it’s so personal- get the one you really love, regardless of what anyone else thinks 😊
