Gold brass taps etc

Please help me!

We bought our house 10 years ago. The bathrooms were AWFUL- really good quality stuff but 1980s at their best and one bathroom is orange and gold (yes really). They all have gold taps, showers, handles etc
Somehow or other we have done the kitchen, every room and a loft conversion and only now getting round to the bathrooms.
Weirdly (and probably inevitably) gold/brass taps etc are back in! And I am tempted to go for them (not the orange obviously)
So do you think the matt polished/brass hardware will date? Should I go chrome do you think it will date less?
I attach the sort of thing I am looking at.

Gold brass taps etc

I think chrome will date less.
Brushed brass can tarnish too.

I always try and avoid things which might date. I'd go for chrome 👍

I think chrome looks dated. My house is Victorian - it’s all brass. You should chose what you like - everything dates…but if you love something it won’t bother you.

I agree that chrome is starting to look dated now (who ever thought gold would come back in!?!).

My only concern with brass/gold is how well it cleans up/lasts as I suspect a lot of them are just coated.

I think the op's photo looks lovely - imagine it with chrome accessories, it would look a bit more ordinary.
On the performance of brass painted - I haven't always been too impressed with the functionality of chrome either. My expensive loo seats have chrome hinges an they are pitted - nothing lasts forever but their performance was pitiful <see what I did there>😁
I honestly think you can only go with what you like. My kitchen is full of chrome and stainless steel - I'm not changing it - but my new bathroom is brushed brass, my new windows and doors got black accessories. I won't replace stuff that works just fine but I'll certainly not stick with chrome because I have it in my kitchen. I love the warmth of brass - it feels more homely but you can go too far - I mean imagine a gold bean to cup - but a black one would work, everything doesn't have to be matching.

Brass is the time honoured style - long before we got chrome plated taps, everything was made out of brass. So I think chrome is a style that comes and goes, and I think at the moment it had it's time and, especially in basic forms, can look a bit dated, while brass is the equivalent to a little black dress or a blue denim Jeans. Many people also think that chrome won't peel, but brass will. All taps/shower heads etc are made out of solid brass, and then plated with a finish. Oiled brass is often the only non plated, solid finish. So a plated polished brass finish will last in theory as long as a chrome plated finish, it just depends on the quality. It's really down to personal choice and the overall style you are going for. I just don't like mix and match so much in the same room. So it also depends on what your radiator valves, your door handle and your toilet flush look like.

NellyBarney · 23/08/2023 11:53

I'm of course a bit OTT with my preference for the same or cohesive style of metal finish throughout a room. But if you do suffer from the same affliction, radiator valves etc can be painted with metallic paint.

Being overly concerned with buying things that never date means that you are in danger of playing it too safe and your brand-new decor looks dull and boring before it's even seen the light of day.

Our house had gold everything when we moved in, taps, door handles, window handles etc. 5 years in we have replaced all but two outside door handles. They have got to go!

Every word of this!

I have unlacquered brass taps, and while they do tarnish they're so easy to clean with a bit of brasso. Also, the tarnished look is pleasing too in its own way. A good compromise would be brushed nickel. It's not as silvery as chrome, its more hard wearing, and it's cheaper than brass. Also, I found waiting times for brass fixtures to be way longer as it wasn't held in stock. That was 2 years ago though, maybe it's changed now.
