Bathroom - big beige tiles

magnolia1997 · 29/07/2023 16:47

We have a small bathroom - white suite and floor to ceiling big beige tiles that were all the rage about 20 years ago.

I suppose it could be worse as it's 'neutral' but it just feels quite drab.

Any ideas/pics please on how to make it more appealing.

I can't put pictures on the walls as that would involve drilling into tiles and I'm not sure that would look any good with tiles behind them.

Thanks.

How about plants to give it a lift? I’m sure you can get see-thrown stick on selves that could have trailing plants maybe

Sorry see-through! 😀

If your can’t re-tile, as small tiles would make a small bathroom appear bigger, then I’d go with lots of plants to hide them.

Do you have a window, would a bright colourful blind help, also lighting can make a difference. Bright towels, bath and pedestal mat, shower curtain. Do you have a windowsill where you could put a vase of flowers or a plant.

Thanks for the replies - I agree with all of them!
First step is to give everything a good scrub to make it look as new as possible.

Do you have a big mirror? If not I would get a decent size one above the sink
agree re plants
there are some nice little plant tables (eg With hairpin legs) - you can put a plant on and then one or two on the floor beside?
i have print hand towels which bring some colour (our b/room white tho)

Roselilly36 · 02/08/2023 02:31

Can you accessorise with a colour, to lift the room, lilac imho seems to work well with beige. or shower board over the tiles for a new look.

minipie · 02/08/2023 13:37

I agree about a big mirror. Look for one which has fixings at the top only, so that you can screw it into a grout line and avoid drilling into tile.

Floor standing plant if there is space, or ceiling hung as a PP suggests. Wooden accessories will bring warmth and interest

A bathroom rug can make a big difference, pick a washable one

Beige is back by the way! Just not yet in bathrooms…but give it time 😆

FWIW I would not use bright colours, bright & beige don’t work IMO. Suggest wood and muted warm colours that are fashionable right now like brick, plaster pink and olive green, these will go with the beige but also update the room

LadyVictoriaSponge · 02/08/2023 13:46

Beige is all the rage if you look at any influencers house account, it’s the new grey! their houses are top to bottom beige so your tiles are so out they are back in again! They tend to decorate the beige with fake olive trees, wicker and dark wood accessories and white towels.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm going to empty everything out and give it a good scrub and someone is coming to regrout and reseal the shower cubicle.
I would like a big mirror but there is a mirror/shelf unit attached and sealed at the sides so that would probably cause some damage if removed.
Definitely going the plants route and some nice new towels rather than the ragged bunch we have 😂.
There is also an open shelving unit that matches the mirror (Ikea). It's not very deep and not much use but is full if DH's bits and bobs so tidying that up will also help.

That’s good OP, you will do a great job I’m sure.

BorgQueen · 02/08/2023 19:01

Of course you can put pictures or shelves up - that’s what command hooks are for.
We have a heavy mirror held onto the tiles by command hooks, it’s never moved in over 5 years, I’m not sure how we’ll ever get it down in all honesty.
Shelves / caddies can be attached by suction cups.
I have a mixture of large charcoal grey tiles with metallic mosaic trim and beige sparkle wall panels, when I want a change I buy a new colour blind and bathmat and new storage baskets for the tall unit. I’m on a mustard theme currently.
My DD’s ensuite in her house is all beige, she has all emerald green accents

Do pictures look ok on a tiled wall?

I've never used them, so can't recommend them, but have you considered tile stickers/decals?

Maybe a few dotted around could work?

Aquaphant · 02/08/2023 22:41

You could cover them with bathroom wall cladding, it's not too hard to do and looks real
