Hi, does anyone have the urge to decorate fabulously and quirky, colours, patterns, textures etc but for some reason really hold back?
I wonder if a part of my reasons for never feeling at home or settled in places is because of this?
I just never feel at home really 😕
I suppose I might if my home felt like it had some of my personality?

Anyone else felt similar?

Aw I love it!! I don't own my own home but would love to be allowed to fully explore my creativity through interior design! Have to make do with displaying my weird fabulous charity shop finds instead 🤔

I follow some interesting designers on insta too which helps to scratch the itch a bit!

It takes bravery to step outside of the norm
But most things can be undone if they don't work out , so go for whatever

There is a group called Maximalist Design and Decor on Facebook that you might enjoy, and may encourage you to just go for it!

Thanks ❤

I'm going to check out the fb group now!

Designers I love pearl lowe and selina lake so I'll look for some others!

I've always fancied expensive green palm print wallpaper and neon pink touches.

My house is beige.

Echio · 24/07/2023 13:38

@ZenNudist is that because you don't own so can't, or don't quite have the courage?

I'm in the latter group. Finally got my own place and I've neutralled the hell out of it despite spending hours online looking at fancy popping colour skirting boards and amazing fabrics and furnishings.

Wish I wasn't such a boring numpty about it all. I just can't bring myself to do something I know my mother would hate. What's my brain doing?!!!

I would love that so much! 😍

I think I'm going to actually make some changes!

@Echio I'm the bloody same! Literally my mum hates my tastes and I just feel like I'd disappoint her more!

I'm 37 😳

Me, my mother and my adult daughter now have a good laugh at how different our tastes are

LibertyLily · 24/07/2023 15:54

We have always had fairly maximalist taste and the styling of our house (welshmillreimagined on insta) reflects this. We've gone with a bold colour scheme incorporating items/art we love that we've collected over the years.

I know it isn't to everyone's taste but we're surrounded by stuff that makes us happy in a colourful environment which is the most important consideration imho. I'd rather be seen as a bit weird than boring 😁

I like to step away from the grey that seems to be everywhere in some homes. There’s only 2 grey items - the foldable Ottoman style thang that stores the board games and is a seat in DS’s room and stationery storage/newspaper box. We like our artwork here, nice prints and photos. Quirky enough to be worth very little but I like to go to art galleries and have caught on to the trend for walls with colour being the thing now rather than just white walls. We have terracotta walls in the sitting room, a blue dining room and a yellow office/spare room. The sitting room has orange chairs with colourful cushions. I like quirky things on the mantelpiece - geometric vase, torso sculpture, Bols cottages, an oversized hourglass timer. Mostly junk shop finds and bits that I’ve got given as gifts on far east trips.

Can you start with 1 room and just go for it? Paint is relatively cheap and you can always repaint. Maybe start with the downstairs loo if you have one, or the hallway. Any small area where you can experiment with wallpaper, colours, accessories/lamp shade with little costs.

Saz12 · 28/07/2023 08:45

Ive found that the rooms I most enjoy being in are ones Ive decorated with "how they feel" rather than how they look. So a utility room in energetic colours would be great, but Id not want my living room to feel like that.

Coukd you start in a safe place - like pp said, downstairs batgroom or utility?

Samanabanana · 28/07/2023 08:53

I am in the process of decorating my DC1's room. I've painted vertical stripes in one colour, and another block colour on the other walls. I say decorate your house in the style you love - life is too short to not be happy at home!
