Kitchen window blinds help!

Hello lovely MN! We are going to move to a new place and the kitchen has a huuuuge window and is next to the back door which also has a window. None of these are frosted. They overlook the back garden but the back garden is overlooked by some tall blocks of flats one one side and then the back of another house.

I was thinking of some blinds, maybe roller blinds or ones with slats? I would love some inspiration (the kitchen plan is in the photo, the computer messed up the units under the sink, but hoping you get the gist!).

It's my dream shaker style kitchen and I really want the blinds to quietly fit in so as not to take away from how nice I feel the kitchen looks.

Any ideas, or colours and shadea hugely welcome. Many thanks!
xx

Vertical blinds would be best so that you can slide open them fully to the left to open the whole space up. I'd recommend fitting them yourself too. We got some for out shower room from here https://www.247blinds.co.uk/vertical-blinds
If the back door glass is clear too then you would need a roller blind for that. However this won't match so you would need a roller blind for the window in the same style. Hope all makes sense 🙂

Thank you. I always felt like vertical blinds felt a bit office-like but I can see it working! I especially like how there will be an option to slide them fully open to the left.

For door window blind, did you mean a roller blind in the same colour as the vertical blind?

Thank you again @LuluLouise

I might go for a faux wood blind to match the the worktop, or maybe a blind that pulls up halfway.

AuntieDolly · 24/07/2023 20:25

I've got ask - is that an angled worktop? How are you meant to get in the cupboards underneath?

MillWood85 · 24/07/2023 20:28

Luxaflex do a day and night blind. The day option gives you a screen fabric for privacy that doesn't block light, and the night option is blackout? https://www.luxaflex.co.uk/features/day-and-night-blinds/

You could fit a Duette one to the window and a Plisse into the frame of the back door to match. We've got them in every room downstairs and they're brilliant.

I’d agree with wooden slatted horizontal blinds which can lift up. Vertical blinds would be more likely to get splattered with food in a kitchen? (Maybe it’s just me who’s a messy cook!)

tenbob · 24/07/2023 20:33

You can get frosting film that sticks to windows and looks as if it’s frosted glass. I think that would look best on the door and then a blind for the window but definitely not vertical blinds because as you said, they look like an awful 80s office

If you get frosting film, get the static one, not the sticky one as it’s easier to apply and gives a much better finish

Can your budget stretch to plantation shutters?
Even half height ones would look really good

Roselilly36 · 24/07/2023 21:15

I would go for window film, so many different designs, cheap to buy, easy to fix. I wouldn’t have slatted blinds in a kitchen, dust and grease in kitchens make them hard to clean. If you really want a blind, I would go with a roller blind.

Lamplightatdusk · 24/07/2023 21:31

@mummatam the kitchen looks lovely. It depends if you want to be able to look out of that window too. For taller buildings behind I would recommend frosted window film to the top 1/3 or half which would still give you a view out. You can also get reeded glass window film too (looks like vertical line glass but would give more privacy)

I have used frosted film all over my house including on the back of obscured bathroom glass and the front door panels so you cannot see in. The best one in my opinion is Purlfrost.

For kitchen blinds we have a roller blind so that you can lift is as high as you like. For the door what about Perfect Fit blinds? They are attached to the glass part of the door, we have them on our French doors so we can open them without a curtain/blind flapping around. If you don't feel comfortable measuring up for that yourself then choose a local blind company. Don't go with Hilary's or any other National brand.

We have always bought all of our blinds (Roman, Venetian, Roller etc) from Blinds2go.co.uk. They have also just brought out their no drill Roman blinds, it works on a tension header so no drilling needed.

No hehe the computer design just messed up. This is the only photo I have of that side of the kitchen, it's just a regular set of straight cupboards 😅

Thank you! I'm so excited for it!

I am going to take a look at the frosted film - I'd never thought of that! It's tricky because the kitchen does overlook the garden too and although our DC1 is just a few months old, I hope one day I can see her play outside from the kitchen!

Thanks everyone for the suggestions!

Aww sadly we can't stretch to plantation ones but I agree, they'd look lovely!

Wish I messaged here sooner! We installed regular wooden blinds to our staircase window but it's very very close to the neighbours next door. The blinds you mention sound perfect for that! 😩

Halfway roller blind should do it. Also, grow herbs or house plants in the windowsill if that’s an option

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 24/07/2023 23:30

Plantation shutters would interfere with your corner cupboard. I have perfect fit slatted blinds on my French doors and a standard matching slatted blind on the adjacent window. It all matches really well.

MissSmiley · 25/07/2023 00:05

I have a similar kitchen with windows onto the street, I went for sheer roller blinds, I have then open in the day but if I do want them closed they let plenty of light in, at night time they completely obscure any view, one of mine is really wide and they very easy to use, I think wooden slatted (I have them in my office) would block out too much light

vivaespanaole · 25/07/2023 08:03

Its a beautiful huge window. Will be lovely
To look out when washing up. Consider splashing from the sink and rinsing things and doing dishes. A giant single colour roller blind with a stain slap bang in the middle from rinsing a bolognese pan would drive you mad every time you looked at it.

cariaaad · 25/07/2023 23:10

You can get privacy window film that sticks to the window so you can see out but it looks like mirror from the outside, so you can't see in. Not tried it myself so can't comment on how effective it is though!

parietal · 25/07/2023 23:22

not vertical blinds, they look like a cheap office and get in a mess very easily

roller blinds or day-night blinds would work best

I'd make sure you can see your garden to keep an eye on kids playing so I would say roller blind or slatted blind. I think wooden slatted blinds look the nicest. I'd fit them high and get them made by blinds2go or similar so they don't block too much light when fully up. So many colours to choose from. Then just privacy film on the door.
