HELP with colour scheme please.

Recently moved, bought the pictures Emma J Shipley curtains for bay window in 3yo daughter’s bedroom. She LOVES them, but we’re due to start painting soon and I have NO idea how to match them. Was initially thinking a dusky pink half wall (e.g. Sulking Room Pink or Cinder Rose by F&B), but she has made it VERY clear that she does not like pink.

I fear I’ve gone too bold with the curtains and now have no idea what to do with the rest of the room.

I’m pretty rubbish with design etc so any help appreciated.

HELP with colour scheme please.

Ooo that is tricky! Would she be happy with a neutral. Then pick out some of the blues for furniture or the door perhaps?

CatchHimDerry · 16/07/2023 00:04

Could go contrasting so an orangey based colour against the blue, or a sage / green against the pink will work well I think! F&Bs Pigeon and Treron are both fab

Tippexy · 16/07/2023 00:10

I’d go with the dusky pink as it would look amazing.

It’s your house… you’re letting a three year old child dictate the rules?!

RugbyMom123 · 16/07/2023 00:52

I got my chart out for you 🤣

The more I look at it, the more I think it’s not a disaster. Could have been a bit much with SRP or cinder rose. And I am getting super excited about the idea of a blue door

Potential neutrals…
Elephants breath
peignor
dove tale
setting plaster
jitney
joas white
oxford stone
stoney ground
whole column matchstick down to cord looks so sludge and odd in the chart but look entirely different away from the cooler neutrals and work well in north face rooms as don’t have the sludge green/grey undertone so may be worth a look depending on your facing.

Companies like lick and coat have a lot more warm neutrals than F&B. Might be worth a look if you decide that’s the direction as opposed cool.

Is there a natural stopping point on the wall? You could go dark at the bottom to match one of the greens or blues in the curtains. It would take longer to look grubby too, as long as you don't get the chalky finish that scuffs really easily.

It's her room! Why wouldn't you pick a colour she'd actually like??

piedbeauty · 16/07/2023 12:59

I'd go with a warm neutral or a pale turquoise to pick up the accents in the curtains, then white or pine wood for furniture. Blue accents like cushions/rug, etc.

Thanks all! Some really useful guidance on here, really appreciate it. I actually hadn’t considered a neutral but actually think that will be the way to go - it’ll grow with her and allow me to bring a bit more colour into the accessories / bedding etc. Have ordered some samples and see where we get to!

Thanks although not here for a parenting discussion, just genuine advice.

FWIW, it’s her house too, and her room is her space. She’s a key part of the family and deserves to have a space she likes and feels comfortable in.

I would go a light beige for the walls and then match the colours in the curtains to bright soft furnishings such as rug, bedding and cushions.

Agreed.
A lovely oatmeal/ stone with electric blue bedding.

I also let my kids choose the colour of their walls. I have about 44 other walls that I can choose the colour of.

We had a similar with very vibrant patterned curtains, in the end I picked out a colour that was just a tiny accent feature in the curtains (incidentally, a plaster pink when the curtains are yellow and blue with fruit and plants all over them ) and then I painted my wardrobes with the main blue colour from the curtains that I had colour matched as furniture paint, and the whole thing goes together perfectly. If you’d shown me the wall colour and the curtains I would never have considered putting them together!

do you have the curtains yet or just ordered online?

Thank you! Do you have any pics you would mind sharing? Sounds like a similar vibe to our room!

yes, already have the curtains - they were a bit of an impulse buy as a bargain in the sale.

the room is north facing for reference, but a big bay window and lots of morning sun.

I can see a neutral colour in the curtains - go with something that matches that. Or a washed out bluey grey that goes with the lighter blue. It’ll be lovely

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/07/2023 17:06

Those curtains are lovely OP.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 16/07/2023 17:32

@NatashaRB here you go. The plaster pink colours are nice in that they vary hugely in the different light during the day, sometimes looking quite grey, sometimes really pinky but as you can see from the curtain it’s a colour you’d automatically think was in there, it’s just a tiny part of the detail on the leaves.

it a bit hard to see, but it looks as though there’s a paler blue in the print- I’d go with that.
