Where is good for sofas?

Boring but I need a new sofa. I went to John Lewis yesterday and found one I liked but looked online today and the reviews all say the cushions filled with some environmentally friendly stuff become hard and lumpy after time so that's out.

Where is good? I need to be able to sit on the sofa and look at proper size fabric swatches not tiny squares.

Thanks for any advice

Scouring these suggestions. I've been looking for a new sofa for months!

I don’t know about now but we have a 15 year old M&S sofa bed that has lasted very well for what we paid for it.

Don’t go to Willow and Hall - we had a dreadful experience ordering from them earlier this year. Great before you order, fabric swatches, etc. Dreadful as soon as there’s a problem (arrived damaged).

I love Loaf but can’t afford new!

Look at places local to you that do seconds/cancelled orders/nearly new furniture, etc. I can suggest places we’ve looked at stuff near Bury St Edmunds and Retford if either is any good?! We ended up getting a Loaf sofa at a vastly discounted price from one of these.

Hi! Could you please point me in the right direction for sofas in the BSE area? I'm really struggling to find one I like, is good quality and in my price range. Any help really appreciated! Thanks ☺️

I always buy sofa beds. They are always more sturdy, never actually used the bed though.

WhoHidTheCoffee · 31/12/2023 01:35

@LeaFinalGirl , the place we looked at was Direct Furniture Outlet and they do quite a lot of Loaf seconds. Well worth a look.

Try JosephJames Furniture - we ordered beautiful sofas from them and they were delivered across the country within a few days.

Sofa.com
Love Your Home (but only one showroom, in Surrey)
Darlings of Chelsea

I have sofas from all of these and am happy with them.

Sofas & Stuff and Arlo & Jacob also seem good quality from the showrooms.

Have been warned off Loaf as looking very saggy and baggy after a few months and needing plumping multiple times a day to look decent. Plus many of their designs are incredibly low.

I had a lovely leather sofa and chair from Darlings of Chelsea that lasted over 20 yrs .Excellent British company .Ours was made in a little warehouse in Manchester which we visited .They could make anything in any fabric, colour we wanted and were so helpful .
I personally have heard horror stories about Sofology frames made from off cuts of wood .
We have had sofas from DFS in the past when first married and they were fine. Not sure I would buy from them now.
Laura Ashley were fantastic quality and I have a 6 yr old Snuggler which is pristine and my fav chair in the house .We currently have a corner sofa from M &S we are very pleased with and a suite from Oak furniture land , never bought from them before so was a bit nervous but it seems to be wearing well ,is very stylish and comfy .Hope that's helpful .

Sorry this is so long ago but wondering about Love Your Home and darlings of chelsea:

  1. How much plumping maintenance do they require?
  2. How staun resistant/ are the removable covers washable?
  3. How firm do they feel?

I'm really struggling to find a sofa I like! willing to drive to surrey but wold love to get some insight before I make the journey.

Thank you !

Both are very good quality I’d say, no plumping at all. We have the Ottilie from LYH and the Evelyn from Darlings, I can’t vouch for other styles. We’ve only had them about 18 months but so far wearing very well.

Both feel quite firm but in a comfortable way, the LYH one was perhaps a little too firm on arrival but quickly softened and is now ideal.

One big annoyance: the fabric on our LYH sofa is not colour fast it turns out, so I now have whiter patches where I dabbed off a couple of spills. I don’t think they’re doing that fabric any more but in general I would say pay close attention to fabric choice - really query how hard wearing the fabric is, how to clean it etc. Don’t assume their fabrics are washable, or even wipeable, some are some aren’t. Maybe get several samples and do some tests on them.

The Darlings sofa was in our own bespoke fabric choice so any issues with that are my responsibility ! (No spills so far anyway).

DO NOT GO TO DFS. I've had nothing but endless trouble with them over delivery. It's eventually come with the wrong feet on. Couch is lovely and comfortable though. I would recommend SCS. I get a new sofa every 2 years and never had any problems with SCS.

i’m looking for sofa brand recommendations and came across this old thread, and this post made me laugh.

I think you need to ask yourself… why do i need to get myself a new sofa over two years? could it be that SCS isn’t perhaps the best quality?!

Lemoonada · 03/10/2024 22:11

@nootcoffee that's hilarious!

I ended up going with Love Your Home and highly highly recommend. The quality is impeccable.

SofaSofa. But only one branch, Newport south Wales.

Barker & stone house .

Recently, I’ve liked Sofas and Stuff and Neptune. Both have showrooms, lots on show, proper swathes of material. My Neptune one isn’t too deep so it’s comfy, they hold their shape. But spendy £££.

Doingmybest12 · 04/10/2024 06:33

If you are near Long Eaton , Derbyshire, there is a good upholstery shop on one of the industrial parks. You can choose the style, size and fabric.

Warmfeet · 04/10/2024 06:33

I got one from Next that I finally got rid of after 20 years and it was still really comfy. Got another one and one of the wooden pieces in the frame broke after 3 years when a teenager leapt on it. Went to scs and the salesman jumped on the one I liked just to show how tough it was built. Not had it long but very happy.

shakeitoffsis · 04/10/2024 07:12

Arighi bianchi in Macclesfield is fantastic.

doneandone · 04/10/2024 10:52

I would avoid Sofology, we had a total nightmare with them a few years ago and so did my friend. If you're in the midlands then it might be worth a trip to the DFS show room at Darley Dale. They have ex display sofas there and you can get them that week!
We bought a 2 Joules patterdale sofas for half the price it would have cost for new ones. They were in great condition. We chose them on the Monday and got them delivered on the Friday. They do have a new section there too, but we were on a budget and needed sofas quite quick (after Sofology let us down!!)

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 06/10/2024 07:35

Mine are from Next but I've noticed when I looked a couple of years ago that their newer sofa's aren't made as well, the cushions aren't stuffed with feathers anymore and don't feel like they'd hold their shape.

Alfierabbit · 10/10/2024 20:19

My Sofa is from M & S which we have had about 5 years. We got the special protector added when purchased. However it looks dirty as I think there is colour trabsfer from dark clothing. Does this always happen ? Is there any fabric which is durable or any make more durable?

MissBridgetJones · 10/10/2024 21:32

Currently having a real battle with Sofa.com.

I think the quality is shocking given it's marketed at higher end than DFS/sofology.

It's less than year old and looks like it needs replacing. They sent an independent engineer out, he took one look and said the cusion pads and seat pads were very poorly stuffed and needed replacing- we then received the exact same as replacements, currently waiting for a third set to be delivered. Avoid.

They are now owned by sports direct.

Paddingtonthebear · 10/10/2024 22:36

M&S will stop selling their own brand large furniture including sofas later this year.

Moo2019 · 14/10/2024 22:49

@Badger1970 really intrigued by your idea, would it be exceptionally expensive?
