What makes a home for you?

We are in a very fortunate position to have bought our dream family home, a gorgeous Victorian terrace.
We fell in love with it at first glance, and fortunately the survey came back very positive and we went ahead.
The previous owner has been unbelievably kind, he left us a good amount of furniture in fantastic shape, which we love.
It's been 3 months now and while we love the house, it still feels like someone else's.
We brought our own fragrances, some of our own furniture etc but I still don't feel settled.
What is it for you that makes your home your own?

For me it’s photos, art work, my favourite books, my cat, the Welsh blanket from my in-laws thrown over the sofa.

Time.
The people.
Personal things that have history and memories.
I’m sentimental about objects that have been passed down.
Then, soft furnishing are important to me. Curtains and colour!

Congratulations on your new house That's lovely
I moved into my own flat after divorce 7 years ago and I think it took me a year for it to feel like mine so going through the seasons to see how the light changes how things looked
I decorated in a neutral latte tone and my sentimental things plus nice framed photos of my DC on the walls
It didn't truly feel like a home until I got my dog though!
It's only been 12 weeks for you, so I'd say give it time, there's no rush. In time it will definitely feel like your home

Photos/ pictures and little accessories, scent eg some candles that I absolutely love (St Eval bay and rosemary is a favourite), having a dog, houseplants, fish tank (not for everyone haha) and just time.

Houseplants, soft furnishings like lovely throws and cushions. Then candles and accent lighting.

Privacy and not overlooked especially in the back garden.

My own bathroom.

Not fussed about decor or furniture so long as it’s practical.

The stuff we've collected over a number of years - so a mix of antique/vintage and more contemporary decorative items including art and taxidermy, loads of lovely cushions, rugs, lamps and favourite pieces of furniture (again a mix of very old and new), plus all our books. All of these things mean something to us and make a place comforting and feel like home.

However, for only the second time out of eight property purchases, we bought this place with our heads not hearts and it's taken several years to finally feel like home (mainly because everything was done so shoddily by the previous owners that we've needed to gradually redo/reconfigure the lot as funds allowed)....and now we're going to sell!

My photos, little things we've made, especially seasonal things that we get out every year.

Maybe put the furniture they left in different places to where they were originally, or style them differently?

Dogs
Children
The memories. A lovely house will only over time become a home. A home is the place where your children grow up, where you host a 50th birthday bbq or where you make memories celebrating Christmas.
