Curtain options for an off-centre window

The window in our lounge sits slightly to the left of centre, so I think normal curtains would look silly. The door opens into the room and hits the wall to the right of the window, so I had in mind those wave curtains but just one wide panel that pulls to the left. But I did a rough online quote for these and it was coming out at about 1k?! Is that about right? The room is about 10.5 foot wide.

Can anyone suggest any more budget friendly options for curtains that pull to the left and don't open symmetrically? All the curtain rod options I can find have a bracket in the middle so would have to open both ways.

How about a curtain pole instead? You could make it overlap the window; and the brackets fit near the ends. B&Q have a good range, both wooden and metal.

Extend your curtain pole to create the impression of centered window. But double the width in fabric to ensure permanent gathers in place which is more flattering. Top tip, use a local seamstress.

You might find that so long as you put pictures on the bigger part of the wall that it doesn’t look silly just to have normal curtains.
I don’t know. Can you share a photo?

ALittleBitAlexa · 06/07/2023 15:35

@sueelleker Excuse my ignorance but would a curtain pole not have the same issue, does it not need a bracket in the middle to support the weight? If not I'd really appreciate you linking one, I looked on B&Q but the ones I looked at all had 3 or 4 brackets.

@PTSDBarbiegirl Sorry I don't know what you mean by permanent gathers?

@CindersAgain I don't have a photo and I'm not currently at home, but I've found a floorplan of a similar layout. So obviously when we're in the room at night the door will be closed and curtains shut, but during the day the door will often be open and curtains open so having them bunched behind the door would be a pain. That's why I was hoping there's a solution for curtains that just pull one way.

IKEA, not ike

PTSDBarbiegirl · 06/07/2023 16:16

Permanent gathers means enough fabric so that if you close curtains there will still be fabric folded or gathered up and they don't pull flat.

Provided you choose a really sturdy curtain pole and end brackets - so a thick wooden pole or a steel one you shouldn't need a centre bracket. John Lewis sell a range of steel poles in various finishes

As londonmummy says, strong poles don't need a centre support. I have wooden ones, about 4ft long, and they just have a bracket at each end.

We had the same problem. We got something from ike where the books hang from the bottom but the attachment to the wall was from the top. I can’t find it on the website at the moment ( though that doesn’t mean it’s not there)
to illustrate what I mean here is a roof fixing one from Dunelm.

Oh this is very interesting! It wouldn't look quite as good as the wave curtain but looks like it would be a lot cheaper, thank you for this suggestion. Did you have to get curtains made to measure?

Thanks for the other suggestions too, but I'm looking for something more like 9 foot wide so I'd be concerned a bracket either end wouldn't be enough

No, I didn’t. I only wanted a cheap, light option for our breakfast room. It has patio doors that look out to the garden which has a field behind so didn’t need it for privacy just for when the sun is shining for glare when eating. Just bought cheap Ikea ones which we push back to the one side of the window which has space. They tuck in beside sideboard. Other side has no room as cupboard fitted right up to patio door hence the need for a solution like yours.

Getoutofherenow · 15/07/2023 07:52

We have a challenging window - the frame sits too high and we couldn't get a middle bracket in, I didn't want the curtain to sit below the frame - I sent dimensions and photos to a company called Home of Interiors (I'm not connected) and they came up with a solution from Silent Gliss and I'm really pleased. They didn't charge me for the service.

ALittleBitAlexa · 15/07/2023 09:26

@Getoutofherenow I'd come across their site when googling and it looks like they really know their stuff. They're not based anywhere near me so I didn't think it was worth pursuing but I might email them, it can't hurt. Thanks!

I’m nowhere close to them either - but they really did sort out a problem I’d be wrestling with for ages
