Trying to strip our utility room and it's not going well! It has a layer of wallpaper with some gloss paint that is totally impenetrable by water.
I've tried scoring across the wallpaper with a Stanley knife then soaking the wall but that just makes the bits where I scored come up easier.
It isn't a huge room but it has high ceilings so there's quite a lot to do..it'll take me into 2024 at this rate! Any tips please?

Zinsser wallpaper remover is brilliant. You dilute it with water, score the paper and spray on. Leave 15 minutes and peel off. Fantastic stuff

Screamingabdabz · 28/06/2023 20:28

Steamers will do the job too. Try Argos.

Reallybadidea · 28/06/2023 20:28

Meant to say that the scoring tool they make speeds up the process further.

Definitely a steamer. When we moved into our Edwardian house there were some areas where we counted 7 layers of paper, several of which had been painted too. We hired an industrial one rather than the little ones you buy at B+Q etc. The tanks were too small on those - a kettle wouldn't have been much worse!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 28/06/2023 20:40

Scoring tools worked well on our gloss covered woodchup. They do then for about £8 in B&Q, it's a round shaped thing with sharp little wheels on the bottom and you wheel it in circles all over the wall then put warm water on which soaks into all the teeny holes the wheels have made.

Changingplace · 28/06/2023 20:43

I had a tonne of horrible woodchip to remove, which had also been painted over!!

I bought wallpaper stripper spray in B&Q, used that plus a steamer and it all came off brilliantly, leave the spray to soak in first too.

Changingplace · 28/06/2023 20:44

Oh also, get a scraper that’s got a sharp knife edge rather than a flat edge.

You need the roller with little spikes all over it to roll all over the paper, then drench it with water (use a spray and go round a couple of times), wait, then use the long handled scraper with a sharp blade. It’s a sweaty job but should be done fairly quickly.

This. We hired an industrial steamer. Nothing else would have got through layers of painted wood chip.

A steamer doesn’t do anything water won’t do to paper and glue. It’s the waiting that allows the mess to soften and getting it really wet behind the paint.

Seeline · 29/06/2023 09:17

When there are several layers of paper hat have been up for decades, a steamer is definitely required. The plaster and paper is so dry that just soaking really doesn't help.

pickledandpuzzled · 29/06/2023 09:38

I seem to remember wallpaper paste helped- it holds the water against the paper longer.

I always use a razor stripper which is basically a large razor blade rather than the standard shitty scraper. It gets to everything but you just have to be careful to not gouge the wall. Start in an area that will be hidden when finished to get the hang of it. I lay my left hand on the bit just before the blade to control it, my right hand is on the handle. Best thing I have ever used.

ive Tried this exact scraper and it damaged the plaster and wall
boiling water from kettle mixed with zinsser wallpaper stripper and let it soak

Nat6999 · 09/07/2023 01:52

Don't use a steamer, any cracks in the plaster & the steam will penetrate & fetch it off. Get a decorators spike roller to prick holes in the paper, buy a professional decorators long handled scraper & a spray bottle with soapy water, scrape off the top surface then mist with the soapy water, leave for 15 minutes & the rest should remove easily. You can buy everything from B & Q.

ZairWazAnOldLady · 09/07/2023 07:21

I think steamers are rubbish. I use a spray paint pump filled with water and get the wall really wet.

Trumpton · 09/07/2023 07:27

We used THIS SYSTEM to remove stubborn painted wood hip. As others have said the most important part is soaking and the soaking sheets really help.

Sorry for bumping the thread, but in the last week, I went through the process of stripping the wallpaper in our house.
There was so much nonsense online about about what kinds of steamer strippers to get, but I found a DIY information site that was really good at recommending which kind of tool I should get for the job.

I ended up opting for the Black and Decker recommendation and it's worked really well for us.
