Do these colours go? And if so, which curtains?

The paint swatch is setting plaster which I LOVE - sofa (you can just see at the bottom) is textured grey - I’ve tried to pullout colours from the Kingfisher cushion to create a palate but the Dunelm Kingfisher curtains are too busy / much.

do you like these colours together? Curtain ideas?

I’m afraid I very much do not

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 15:53

@lucylousweetie Other colour palates to go with setting plaster walls and the grey sofa? Cushions cold be redistributed…. Would the navy by itself work?

I think the main issue is that you have competing types of neutral colour in your wall colour choice and sofa. They don't harmonise and they need different types of accent colours. Unless you want a new sofa, the easiest change is the wall colour.

I would go with the kingfisher curtains because I'm a sucker for that sort of decorative work, and then pick out an exact match wall colour (the pale silvery green leaves? Or the apricot flashes in the bird?) and accent cushions in the rich apricot and teal of the bird. That would pull it all together.

We redecorated recently but kept the very expensive curtains and instead of a neutral wall colour, chose an exact match from one of the minor colours in the curtains then added original artwork that also picked up the same colours. It really works.

I think @SoWhatEh has given some very good advice.

It's very jarring at the moment tbh

lucylousweetie · 26/06/2023 15:58

To me the colour combo simply does not work.

Not in a safe mix-matchy way nor in a more Interesting, flamboyant way.

but your home op and if you like it - go for it

SwedishEdith · 26/06/2023 15:58

I'm not sure Setting Plaster goes with grey. I think that be why you're struggling. It's a warm colour while grey is cool.

morelippy · 26/06/2023 15:59

We've had setting plaster and it's so lovely.. good choice. It goes really well with the rusts that are around. With navy that would be lovely.

morelippy · 26/06/2023 15:59

Rusts picking up the kingfisher colours too

morelippy · 26/06/2023 16:01

So less pink, more rust. Sorry, so many posts

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 16:03

You see that’s what I thought I was doing - the rusty orange picked up in the bottom cushion and the bobbles, setting plaster sort of echoing the ‘glow’, the teal cushions reflecting the brighter colours…. I am so bad at this ☹️

In the pic it looks more pinky coral but that could be my phone

You aren’t bad at this OP!!!

Do you like it? Simple question. Do you like it?

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 16:06

Pink and grey go generally though? Don’t they? Is it’s the teal that is the problem? Or those cushions and different paint? What would be a ‘cool’ colour that would work with the grey sofa?

OP posts:
TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 16:08

@morelippy - do you think if I ditched all the Kingfisher stuff and just stuck with setting plaster, the grey sofa and navy would that be ok?

TrishTrix · 26/06/2023 16:09

You need different curtains/ cushions and I'm not sure blue tones really go well with grey. I've got grey sofa - my tones are fuchsia and a brighter teal-green. Walls are white.

I think you could make grey and setting plaster work.

Look at the colours on here in the room set up with the pinky walls and grey sofa (not the cover pic): https://www.alicecaroline.com/product/liberty-interiors-fabric-plain-ointment-f-emberton-linen/

It is however a very very different vibe to the one you have picked.

Setting Plaster would look lovely with navy and grey OP but I think you might need a shot of colour or pattern with it.

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 16:12

@TrishTrix - I love that - I think that’s the level of elegance I aspire to! (My Mum had the peacock liberty fabric in another colour way when I was a child!)

Setting plaster is warm and the grey sofa is cool. I think you need a re think BUT that's only because you asked,if you like it ,you're the one who has to live with it.

You don’t then.

you will know when you like it

TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 20:00

@SwedishEdith any other paint colours I could look at the go with grey? (Ignore all cushions 🤣)

OP posts:
TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 26/06/2023 20:03

@SoWhatEh - that does sound lovely - main issue is I can’t find curtains I like - while other thread about that! (If I won the lottery the first thing I would do is hire an interior designer)

OP posts:
TheEverdelightfulsamantha · 27/06/2023 11:13

Any better? If not they maybe cab anyone suggest a paint that would work with the tones in the sofa?

SwedishEdith · 27/06/2023 18:35

Yes, I think that looks more cohesive. There's probably something extra missing that I'm sure someone else will suggest but I think it looks better 😊

LibertyLily · 27/06/2023 19:16

That's definitely more cohesive....but what's lacking now - imho - are pattern and texture.

I'm probably not the best person to be commenting as my style is extremely bohemian and eclectic. Despite a design background, I recently took an absolute age to reach the right decision on cushions for our newly completed living room.

What I eventually chose - after trialling many different options - is the type of thing others are steering you away from...a riot of seemingly mismatched colours!

Usually I would follow (and give) the advice to have a 'hero' fabric and take the colours for cushions, throws etc from that, but we don't have curtains at the sitting end of our room. I instead took inspiration from the antique Persian rug, the other contemporary rug and the wallpaper we have at the opposite (dining/reading) end. This, coupled with the F&B Olive walls, meant that the colours I could choose from/play with were numerous - olive, hot pink, teal, aubergine, orange, cream, black and gold! Sounds awful, but we're delighted with how it's turned out.

Our cushions - a mix of everything from homemade, Zara Home, Timorous Beasties, William Morris and Anke Drechsel - are an assortment of shapes, sizes and textures too. Some of those I didn't make were picked up preloved on ebay or from Homesense/TK.

Whilst it's so easy to get a cohesive look by buying everything in one place, I actually prefer picking up stuff I love as and when I stumble upon it, but having looked at Dunelm's cushions today they do have a great - not to mention inexpensive! - choice.

If you love something - such as the kingfisher cushion which I think is lovely - I'd be trying to make it work somehow in your room. Either way, pattern needs including somewhere apart from art, imho.

Good luck and have fun - interiors should be a pleasurable experience, but I know often it doesn't feel that way!
