Help me hide/ downplay the brown sofa!

I've got a really old (15?) brown next so far which while comfy, is just so....brown/ beige scheme of about 10 years ago. Carpet can go if anyone can recommend a colour to replace? But is also brown. Bought for practicality but shows every bit of fluff rather like my dark kitchen worktop
It looks skint student rather than skint adult with design aspirations (which I would of course prefer )
Any ideas? We have mustard throws / cushions too but I'm not keen
Thank you!!

shein has sofa covers in a lot of color.

QueefofSheena · 05/06/2023 21:52

DS has a fugly brown leather sofa in his flat with vile coordinating (not) cushions. He’s covered it with a black slipcover from Amazon and neutral cushion covers. Slipcover cost about £20

sofaloathing · 05/06/2023 22:06

Are there any links for these covers? Are they the stretchy ones?

Oof there's loads of choice! What colour with my mad ugly brown carpet ? I'd like to save for wood floor if we can disguise the sofas! Thanks. Love Mumsnet for this kind of help .

Have a look on Shein- loads of sofa covers and throws, some stretchy, some not in100's of colours/designs.

I know- cheap Chinese imports, but needs must.
I have got some quilted sofa and chair covers to protect them from dogs sleeping on them - work a treat.

Tip: read the reviews and size's carefully.

Teal goes amazing with brown imo

coodawoodashooda · 05/06/2023 22:27

I know someone with sofa covers. They look terrible. I'd replace the couch with something from gumtree.

ApolloandDaphne · 06/06/2023 05:50

That's the same colour as my couch and I love it. We have it matched with teal/duck egg cushions and throws. I may have a pick I can add.

I have that sofa, picked up from the local furniture project for £50 and I love it and recline on it every night.

LibertyLily · 06/06/2023 10:02

As it doesn't appear to be really dark brown, it reads fairly neutral to me @sofaloathing. Therefore I think you've got quite a lot of choice when it comes to giving it a new lease of life with cushions/throws.

Personally, I'd avoid too many plain cushions of the same size but would choose different sizes/shapes with lots of pattern and/or texture to elevate the overall look.

When we had a similar (taupe) velvet chesterfield sofa from John Lewis we brightened it up with orange/green patterned cushions, then after we'd moved house and put that sofa in the kitchen we added a mix of teal/turquoise and rusty red cushions - mostly patterned and various sizes/shapes.

sofaloathing · 06/06/2023 12:37

It's more a chocolate brown. Looks darker than the pic OP posted. But maybe new cushions might help. I don't even know what colour new one is get even if I could afford it anyway!

I would try to combine with complementary natural colours- green, cream, linen material etc.

sofaloathing · 07/06/2023 15:09

How about rugs on the brown carpet too? I may need to start another thread I realise.

Put a rug under the front feet of the sofa, as large as you can into the room. This will help to break the colour up and detract from the brown carpet.

Don't make the mistake of getting a small rug for the middle of the room and putting a coffee table on top. Looks awful.

sofaloathing · 07/06/2023 16:57

Yes I agree. I had a beautiful rug that rucked up constantly and just found out my husband binned it (I found out it had gone after reading a thread on here and finding something new to try ! Gutted )

If you cleaned it it would look xxx times better. You can hire a carpet cleaner with an upholstery attachment from lots of places . Now is the time because it will dry more quickly in the coming heatwave ( 🥺 not much sign of it here).

I really wouldn’t try to paint it, it will cost a fortune and comes out streaky. (and on your trousers, too, in my experience,)
