Open plan lounge dining room how to paint?

Hi all we've knocked our lounge through to our dining room and are now in the process of redecorating. It's a 1930's semi with a big bay window in the lounge and a wood burner fireplace. The dining room has a matching fireplace but will be used as a wood store (the chimney flue had pipework put through it years ago before we bought the house) and patio doors opposite the bay window. I want to paint the lounge fireplace alcoves in blue like the attached picture which I have borrowed (it's a dark room and painting the large chimney breast would be too overpowering) but my question is how do I tie in the dining room? I can't decide whether to paint the alcoves in there too (there won't be any shelving) or whether to paint the chimney breast or to just paint it in the lighter colour only? I am going to put velvet blue armchairs/tub chairs either side of the patio doors possibly, would that be enough?
I am aware that blue paint, feature walls can be divisive but it's what we like! Just looking for opinions on how to make the rooms flow!
TIA 😊

Post a picture of the room so we can get an idea. I think it is nice to tie in your scheme to the date of your property for a harmonious look - see these http://www.papersandpaints.co.uk/1930s-colours

@dotdotdotdash please excuse the hot mess that my house is in we are currently having building and redecorating done everywhere😣The fire surround currently in the dining room was left by previous owners and is going to my sister who is in a victorian terrace - current furniture is changing too!

Ah, nice space. And you have the picture rail so you could carry the blue them thru to the dining room by painting alcoves in a mid blue like Little Greene Airforce Blue then use a paler shade like Bone China Pale for above the picture rail and ceiling, then use a warm off-white or stone like Portland Stone pale on the walls throughout. Look at the colour combination suggestions at the bottom of the page for the colours:

I don't work for Little Green by the way, but I like the colours. I get them mixed up using Leyland Emulsion though - cheaper and hard-wearing in a family home.

I’d just do lounge alcoves does it really need tying in
it’s only paint just do lounge see hii ok w u go not a great job to do later

but in a long room heavy colour on one wall can make it look narrow

I have a similar space, 1920’s house, we’ve just decorated but tied both the rooms with chimney breast block colour. Gone from Redcurrent glory to Overtly Olive. Added a couple of photos but one is marked as sensitive?? It’s from Christmas so open at your own risk😂

I would paint all the alcove the same colour to tie it together and white / off white for everywhere else. Lovely light room it can take 4 x blue alcoves.

That's a lovely blue. I'd just do all of it that colour.

@Sorrythatnameistaken this is not a helpful comment (sorry) but I have a similar house and have been considering knocking through too - we currently have an open plan kitchen/diner/snug and I'd like to take it through to our front room. Do you mind me asking how much this cost?

Hi all sorry for not replying - been a busy half term 🙃 thank you for all your suggestions! We've had a think and decided that we are definitely going to paint the alcoves and shelving in the lounge in the blue (@dotdotdotdash it's a period match 😉) and then do the rest in an off white with a warm undertone to keep it light and airy. Then what is difficult to see from the pictures is there is another arch in front of the patio doors leaving two metre wide wall sections which we are going to do in the blue where we will have the reading chairs and small bookcase which I think SHOULD finish/frame it nicely - fingers crossed 🤞.

@caughto sorry I can't be exact we're having so much done at the moment - but without supporting lintel I think it was £1100 all in for ours but that did include replacing skirting to match and a flooring threshold I think 🤔

Xxx

@Sorrythatnameistaken ahh less than I thought it would be - thank you!! Would love to see any "after" pics when you've painted, it looks so good already
