Painting over chalk paint - a mess?

The furniture in my daughter’s room was second hand and originally a very dark wood which we didn’t like. We painted it in white chalk paint after seeing something similar on Pinterest, initially thought it looked great, however now it’s looking scruffy and dull after only a couple of months! I know we can put a waxy covering over it but we wish we’d just done it with normal paint, especially when she gets a bit bigger we want it to be wipeable and not as matte looking.

A friend of mine recently got a set of drawers off FB marketplace and painted them with a pink farrow and ball paint and they look amazing. She said I could probably just go straight over the chalk paint if I just sand it down a bit.

I don’t want to make a huge mess using stripping chemicals etc on the furniture, and I’m not very good at this sort of thing! If I sand it will I be able to just pop a regular paint over the top? Or do I need primer etc?? Any tips very appreciated!

I’ve made the same mistake with chalk paint! I’ve since used frenchic and valspar furniture paint which have both been good. You should always prime first - I use Zinsser 123 primer. I would sand well, prime then paint with proper furniture paint then use a sealant varnish.
